Emulsifiers
How an emulsifier binds water and oil in a formula
This section covers emulsifiers, waxes and related stabilisers that bind the water and oil phases into a single stable cream or lotion. Without an emulsifier these phases separate within a few hours of mixing.
Items in this section are used in the production of creams, lotions and other emulsions. For example Olivem 1000 and cetearyl alcohol are among the most requested base emulsifiers for cream textures.
Varieties and how they differ
Emulsifiers differ by the type of emulsion they form: some work better in oil in water systems, others in water in oil systems. Synthalen W400 is a thickening gel type emulsifier, while lecithin is more often used as a natural emulsifier in lighter textures.
Candelilla wax and carnauba wax are used as co emulsifiers and thickeners, adding body to a texture, while stearic acid often forms part of an emulsifying system together with an alkali to build a stable cream.
Selection and compatible ingredients
Emulsifier choice depends on the desired texture and emulsion type: lighter lotions suit softer emulsifiers, dense creams often need a wax or stearic acid alongside the main emulsifier. Emulsifiers in this section pair with preservatives from the Molds, Packaging, Tools section and with active ingredients in a finished formulation.
Storage and packaging
Emulsifiers are supplied from Germany, Italy, Indonesia, the USA, Poland, France, Switzerland and India among others. Store in a dry place at room temperature, keeping waxes and solid emulsifiers away from direct sunlight to avoid changes in texture.
FAQ
What's included in the Emulsifiers section?
The section includes emulsifiers, waxes and related stabilisers that bind the water and oil phases in creams, lotions and other emulsions.
How do different types of emulsifiers differ?
Some emulsifiers work better in oil in water systems, others in water in oil systems, the choice depends on the desired texture of the finished product.
Do you provide COA and SDS documents for emulsifiers?
Yes, COA, SDS and MSDS documents are available on request, particularly for larger orders, mention this when placing your order by email.
How should waxes and solid emulsifiers be stored?
In a dry place at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, to avoid changes in texture during storage.
Рекомендации
