MONTANOV™ 68 is your go-to ingredient for crafting high-performance cosmetic products that both delight the senses and deliver outstanding results.
Description and Key Features
MONTANOV™ 68 is a unique, self-emulsifying base (INCI: Cetearyl Alcohol, Coco-Glucoside) derived from plant sources. Its innovative lamellar liquid crystal structure closely mimics the natural lipid layers of the skin, promoting enhanced skin barrier function and deep hydration. This makes it an ideal choice for formulators seeking to create elegant and skin-friendly emulsions.
Key features and benefits:
- Natural Origin: Derived from 100% vegetable raw materials (coconut and palm oils, and tapioca starch), making it a preferred choice for natural and eco-conscious formulations.
- Exceptional Emulsification: Creates stable oil-in-water emulsions with a wide range of oil phases, from light to rich textures, suitable for various skincare needs.
- Luxurious Skin Feel: Imparts a distinctive soft, velvety, and non-greasy after-feel, enhancing the sensory experience of your cosmetic products.
- Hydration Boost: Its lamellar structure helps to reinforce the skin's natural barrier, reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and boosting overall skin hydration.
- Versatile Compatibility: Compatible with a broad spectrum of cosmetic ingredients, including active principles, electrolytes, and various pH ranges (typically 3-11).
- Non-Ionic & Mild: Gentle on the skin, making it suitable for sensitive skin types and baby care products.
- Ease of Use: Can be used in both hot and cold processes, offering flexibility in formulation design.

Instructions for Preparation:
- Sanitize: Thoroughly sanitize all your equipment (heat-resistant beakers, stirring rods, pH meter, cream jars) with isopropyl alcohol and allow them to air dry completely.
- Prepare Phases A & B: In separate heat-resistant beakers, combine the ingredients for Phase A (water and glycerin) and Phase B (MONTANOV™ 68, jojoba oil, shea butter, and cetyl alcohol).
- Heat Phases: Gently heat both Phase A and Phase B in a double boiler or microwave (in short bursts, stirring frequently) to approximately 70-75°C (158-167°F). Ensure all solid ingredients in Phase B are fully melted.
- Emulsification: Slowly pour Phase A (water phase) into Phase B (oil phase) while continuously stirring with a stick blender or high-shear mixer. Blend for 2-3 minutes to create a stable emulsion. The mixture will start to turn opaque and thicken.
- Cool Down: Continue stirring occasionally as the emulsion cools down. This helps create a uniform texture and prevents separation.
- Add Phase C (Cool-Down): Once the emulsion has cooled to below 40°C (104°F), add the panthenol, vitamin E, preservative, and optional fragrance oil. Stir thoroughly to ensure all ingredients are evenly distributed.
- Check pH (Recommended): Test the pH of your finished cream. For a face cream, an ideal pH range is typically 5.0-6.0. Adjust if necessary by adding a tiny drop of diluted lactic acid to lower pH or diluted baking soda solution to raise pH.
- Package: Carefully transfer the finished cream into clean, sterilized cream jars or airless pump bottles.
Recommendations for Application and Use:
- Processing Temperature: MONTANOV™ 68 performs best when both oil and water phases are heated to 70-75°C for optimal emulsification.
- Mixing: High-shear mixing during the emulsification step is crucial for creating a stable and smooth emulsion. Continue stirring during the cool-down phase to ensure a homogeneous product.
- Versatility: This base recipe can be customized by adding other active ingredients (e.g., niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, botanical extracts) in the cool-down phase, keeping their solubility and recommended usage rates in mind.
- Storage: Store the finished cream in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight, to maintain its efficacy and extend shelf life. The preservative ensures microbial stability.
- Application: Apply a small amount of the cream to clean face and neck, both morning and evening, massaging gently until absorbed.
- Patch Test: Always perform a patch test on a small, inconspicuous area of skin (e.g., inner forearm) before widespread use, especially if you have sensitive skin or are new to an ingredient.
