Description and Key Features
Sucrose Distearate (INCI: Sucrose Distearate) is a natural, plant-derived sugar ester created from sucrose and stearic acid. This innovative ingredient acts as a highly efficient primary or co-emulsifier for a wide variety of oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. It also functions as a powerful thickening and stabilizing agent, ensuring your lotions, creams, and gels maintain their perfect consistency over time.

Cosmetic Recipe: Lightweight & Hydrating Facial Lotion
Create a light, hydrating, and elegant facial lotion that absorbs quickly, leaving the skin soft and moisturized.
Step 1: Prepare the Water Phase (Phase A)
In a heat-resistant beaker, combine 80% distilled water, 3% glycerin, and 5% Sucrose Distearate. Place the beaker in a water bath and heat both the water and oil phases to 75°C.
Step 2: Prepare the Oil Phase (Phase B)
In a separate beaker, combine 5% of a lightweight oil like Jojoba Oil and 5% Shea Butter. Place this beaker in the same water bath and heat until the Shea Butter is fully melted and the oil phase reaches 75°C.
Step 3: Emulsify the Phases
Remove both beakers from the heat. Slowly and steadily pour the oil phase (B) into the water phase (A) while continuously mixing with a high-shear mixer or hand blender. Continue mixing for several minutes until a stable, homogeneous emulsion forms.
Step 4: Cool and Add Active Ingredients (Phase C)
Place the beaker with the emulsion in a cold water bath (or a bowl with ice) and continue stirring until the lotion cools down to below 40°C. Once cooled, add 1% Panthenol and 1% of your chosen preservative (e.g., Geogard Ultra or Optiphen Plus). Mix thoroughly to ensure all ingredients are fully incorporated.
Step 5: Final Check and Packaging
Perform a pH check (it should be in the 5.0-6.0 range). Adjust if necessary with a drop of lactic acid or baking soda solution. Transfer the finished lotion into a clean, sanitized bottle or jar.
Recommendations for Use:
-
Dosage: This recipe uses 5% Sucrose Distearate, a great starting point for a balanced lotion. You can adjust the percentage between 2% and 10% to achieve your desired thickness.
-
Heat Control: Strict adherence to the 75°C melting point and slow, steady incorporation is crucial for a stable emulsion.
-
Storage: Store your finished product in a cool, dark place. The shelf life will be determined by your chosen preservative.
-
Application: Apply a small amount to clean, dry skin on the face and neck morning and night.
-
Suitability: This lotion is suitable for all skin types, especially normal to combination skin due to its light, non-greasy feel.
