Glycerin 100 g

The everyday chemical that quietly powers multiple industries

Glycerin is a trihydric alcohol that belongs to the category of Acids, Salts, Alcohols, and Alkalis, and its worldwide demand comes far more from food, pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing than from cosmetics alone. In food production it functions as an emulsifier and humectant, keeping baked goods, confectionery and certain beverages moist and stable over time. Pharmaceutical manufacturers rely on glycerin when producing syrups, suppositories and soft gel capsules, since it dissolves active ingredients well and helps form the right base consistency.

In household chemistry glycerin is added to antifreeze mixtures, lubricants, glass cleaners and polishing agents, because it lowers the freezing point of water and gives liquids a useful viscosity. Textile and printing industries use it as a fabric softener and as a plasticizer in inks. In cosmetic manufacturing, from home workshops to full production lines, glycerin remains a foundational humectant: it draws moisture from the air and holds it within the upper layers of skin, which is why it appears in creams, lotions, serums, toners and shower gels. In candle making and occasionally in soap production glycerin is used as a supporting ingredient to improve softness and clarity of the finished item, though this remains a secondary application rather than its primary market.

Among practical considerations, glycerin blends smoothly with both aqueous and oil phases, making it a convenient bridging ingredient between components that otherwise resist mixing. It performs well alongside borax when an emulsion of wax and water needs stabilizing, so many cream bases combine glycerin with Borax 5 hydrate sodium tetraborate 50 g as complementary ingredients. In liquid soap production based on alkaline saponification of fats, where Potassium Hydroxide KOH 500 g is commonly used, glycerin naturally forms as a byproduct of the reaction, and experienced formulators often add extra glycerin to boost the softening effect of the finished product. It is also frequently paired with acids to adjust the acidity of toners and peels, where Malic Acid 25 g serves as a convenient partner for gently correcting the pH of the final formula.

Recommended dosage in cosmetic formulations usually ranges from three to fifteen percent depending on the product type: light toners and mists need only three to five percent, while thicker creams and hand balms can go up to fifteen percent. Glycerin can be introduced at almost any stage of formulation since it withstands heat well and is typically added to the water phase at sixty to seventy degrees Celsius alongside other water-soluble ingredients. Store the opened package tightly sealed in a dry location, since the substance readily absorbs moisture from the air and may change consistency after prolonged exposure. The hundred gram size is well suited for home cosmetic making and small trial batches when a formulator wants to test a recipe before ordering a larger quantity.
