Anhydrous Lanolin 50 g

Why Lanolin Remains a Go-To Barrier Ingredient for Cracked Skin

Anhydrous lanolin is a dense natural wax extracted from sheep's wool after a thorough cleaning process. Unlike liquid oils, it behaves more like a wax and belongs to the group of emollients for cosmetics, forming a occlusive film on the skin surface that slows water loss and shields against external irritation. This property keeps global demand for lanolin steady not only in personal care but also across several industrial sectors that require a stable water-repellent fatty layer.

The biggest share of lanolin usage comes from personal care products aimed at very dry, chapped and rough skin — lip balms, hand and foot creams, heel balms and cuticle treatments. A well-known niche is nipple care products for breastfeeding mothers, where a pure occlusive film matters more than any added fragrance or actives. Beyond cosmetics, lanolin is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry as a base for ointment-type formulations, and in technical applications such as anti-corrosion coatings, leather and footwear conditioning treatments, and metal lubricants. In the textile industry it appears during wool fiber processing, while in leather manufacturing it softens hides and improves their water resistance.

In formulations, anhydrous lanolin is typically added to the oil phase at 60-70 degrees Celsius once fully melted into a uniform mass. Usage levels vary by product type: 1-5 percent works well in lighter creams and lotions, while dense balms and salves for very dry skin may contain 15-30 percent lanolin. Because of its thick, tacky texture, lanolin is rarely used alone — it is usually blended with lighter emollients to balance the sensory feel. A practical pairing partner is caprylic capric triglycerides, which lighten the texture and improve spreadability, along with squalane, which adds a smoother, faster-absorbing finish. For a more modern sensory profile, lanolin can also be combined with SymMollient S Green, which softens the heavy waxy feel of pure lanolin.

The 50 gram size is well suited for home-based formulation, small trial batches and testing different recipes before scaling up to larger production runs. This amount is enough to try several formula variations and find the right usage percentage for a specific product goal. Store lanolin in a tightly sealed container, in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources to keep its texture stable and prevent premature oxidation of the fatty base.

Overnight Heel and Elbow Repair Balm

Anhydrous lanolin 10 g

Coconut oil 8 g

Beeswax 5 g

Sweet almond oil 6 g

Vitamin E 1 g

Melt the lanolin, beeswax and coconut oil together in a double boiler at around 65 degrees Celsius until fully liquid, then stir in the almond oil until the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat, cool to about 45 degrees, blend in the vitamin E, and pour the balm into small tins or jars, letting it set at room temperature for a few hours before use.
