Why 85% Phosphoric Acid in 35 L Drums Remains a Core Industrial Reagent
Phosphoric acid at 85% concentration, supplied in 35 liter drums, is designed for manufacturing plants, workshops and laboratories that need a reliable bulk volume of raw material without frequent reordering. This item belongs to the Acids, Salts, Alcohols, and Alkalis section, which brings together reagents used across many industrial sectors, from food processing to metal treatment. Globally, phosphoric acid remains one of the most widely used inorganic acids thanks to its broad range of applications and cost efficiency at large volumes.
The largest share of worldwide consumption goes into fertilizer manufacturing — ammonium phosphates, superphosphate and complex agricultural blends. The second major application is the food industry, where the acid serves as an acidity regulator and preservative in carbonated soft drinks, particularly cola type beverages, as well as in meat and cheese processing. In metalworking, the acid is the base for steel pickling, rust removal and surface preparation before phosphate coating, which is essential for machine building and fastener production. Another significant segment is water treatment and descaling formulations for boiler systems, cooling equipment and household appliances, along with industrial cleaning products.
In formulations, this acid is often combined with other acidic components to achieve the desired acidity profile. Food and household blends frequently pair it with citric acid, which softens sharpness and adds a mild taste note in beverages. Cleaning and anti-corrosion mixtures often combine it with acetic acid, which enhances mineral scale removal. Buffer solutions and metalworking formulas sometimes rely on a pairing with aminoacetic acid, which stabilizes the pH level and reduces the aggressiveness of the mixture toward equipment surfaces.
When preparing aqueous solutions, the acid should be added gradually, in a thin stream, into cold or room temperature water under constant stirring — never the reverse order, to avoid splashing and localized overheating. Dosage depends on the task: descaling formulas typically require 3 to 8 percent of the solution volume, while metal pickling concentration is adjusted experimentally based on the thickness of the oxide layer. The product should be stored in tightly sealed, chemically resistant containers, away from metal surfaces, alkalis and oxidizers, at temperatures not exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, in a well ventilated area.
Industrial Descaling Concentrate for Heat Exchanger Systems
Phosphoric acid 85% — 4500 ml
Distilled water — 18000 ml
Phosphonate based corrosion inhibitor — 220 ml
Pour
room temperature water into an acid resistant plastic container, then slowly
add the acid in a thin stream while stirring continuously to avoid splashing.
Once fully mixed, add the corrosion inhibitor and continue stirring for another
10 to 15 minutes until uniform. Dilute the resulting concentrate with water
according to the specifications of the equipment before use, and apply it for
circulation flushing of heat exchangers and boiler loops to remove carbonate
and phosphate scale deposits.
