Extending Shelf Life of Water-Based Formulations with Cobiostab 400
Any water-containing formulation, whether a cream, lotion, gel or liquid soap, needs reliable protection against bacteria, yeasts and mold throughout its shelf life. The 1 liter pack of Cobiostab 400 suits studio-scale and small industrial manufacturing, where regular batch production requires a preservative supply covering multiple production cycles without frequent reordering. This product belongs to the Preservatives and Antioxidants category, which brings together solutions for stabilizing water and water-oil based formulas.
Cobiostab 400 remains stable across a wide pH range and works well alongside surfactants, botanical extracts and oils, making it a practical choice for skincare emulsions, shampoos, conditioners, wet wipes and liquid soaps. The preservative should be added at the final production stage, once the emulsion has already formed and the temperature has dropped to around 40 degrees Celsius, which prevents heat degradation of the active molecules. Typical dosage ranges from 0.5 to 1.2 percent of the total formula weight, with the exact figure adjusted by the formulator based on the specific product composition and stability testing results.
In combined preservation systems, Cobiostab 400 is often paired with chelating agents that bind metal ions and improve overall efficacy — Trilon-B works well for this purpose, added in small amounts during the water phase. For formulations at higher risk of microbial contamination, such as natural creams rich in organic extracts, additional protection can come from Germal Plus powder, which acts synergistically with the primary preservative. Hand care products and antibacterial lines also often rely on Triclosan to reinforce the antimicrobial barrier where the product's intended use calls for it.
Cobiostab 400 should be stored in a tightly sealed container, in a dry cool place away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent premature breakdown of the active components. Once opened, the contents should be used within a reasonable timeframe, avoiding moisture or foreign particles entering the container. When storage conditions and dosage recommendations are followed, the preservative maintains its declared efficacy throughout the shelf life of the finished product, which is particularly important for manufacturers producing retail batches on a recurring basis.
Lightweight facial moisturizing emulsion
Distilled water 620 ml
Squalane oil 50 g
Cetearyl emulsifying wax 45 g
Glycerin 28 ml
Cobiostab 400 7 ml
Lavender essential oil 4 ml
Heat
the water phase to 75 degrees Celsius, and separately heat the oil phase with
the emulsifying wax to the same temperature, then slowly pour the oil phase
into the water phase while stirring continuously until a uniform emulsion
forms. Cool the mixture with constant stirring down to 40 degrees, then add the
glycerin, preservative and essential oil, mix for a few more minutes and
transfer into clean containers.
