Versatile Applications and Usage Areas in Cosmetics
MONTANOV™ 202 is incredibly versatile, making it an excellent choice for formulators looking to create premium cosmetic products with superior texture and stability. It is added to the oil phase and heated. (Not for use in candles).
- For Lotions and Milks:
- Gel-Milk (0.5-1.5%): Ideal for crafting ultra-light, refreshing gel-milk textures, perfect for face and body. These formulations are quickly absorbed, leaving a fresh, hydrating feel.
- Light Lotions & Make-up Removers (2-3%): Creates stable, non-greasy lotions that are excellent for daily moisturizing or gentle make-up removal. The elegant texture enhances the user experience.
- For Creams and Balms:
- Conditioners & Hair Creams (2%): Provides effective emulsification for hair conditioners and leave-in creams, helping to smooth hair, reduce frizz, and impart shine without weighing it down.
- Face and Body Creams: At higher concentrations (e.g., 3-5%), it forms rich, nourishing creams with a beautiful sheen, suitable for various skin types and concerns.
- For Specialized Cosmetics:
- Sunscreen and Beach Cosmetics (3.5-4%): Creates stable and water-resistant emulsions for sunscreens and after-sun products, ensuring active ingredients remain evenly dispersed for effective protection.
- Decorative Cosmetics (4-5%): Highly effective in liquid foundations, concealers, and other color cosmetics, providing excellent pigment dispersion, long-lasting wear, and a smooth application.
- Other Applications:
- Serums: Can be used in more viscous serum formulations where a creamy texture is desired.
- Baby Care Products: Its gentle nature makes it suitable for sensitive skin formulations, including baby lotions and creams.
- Pharmaceutical/Dermatological Creams: The stability and skin feel make it a good option for topical therapeutic formulations.
Processing Notes:
- Melting Point: MONTANOV™ 202 should be melted into the oil phase at 85°C.
- Emulsification Process: After combining the heated oil and water phases, begin mixing at slow speeds, gradually increasing the speed. Observe as the coarse dispersion rapidly homogenizes into a smooth, shiny emulsion within three to four minutes. This process creates a stable, visually appealing product.

Instructions for Preparation:
- Sanitization: Thoroughly sanitize all equipment (beakers, stirring rods, containers) with isopropyl alcohol and allow them to air dry completely.
- Prepare Phase A (Aqueous Phase): In a heat-resistant beaker, combine distilled water and glycerin. Heat this phase to 85°C (185°F) using a hot plate or double boiler.
- Prepare Phase B (Oil Phase): In a separate heat-resistant beaker, combine MONTANOV™ 202, shea butter, jojoba oil, and cetyl alcohol. Heat this phase to 85°C (185°F), ensuring all ingredients are fully melted and clear.
- Emulsification: Once both phases reach 85°C, slowly pour Phase B (Oil Phase) into Phase A (Aqueous Phase) while stirring continuously with a stick blender or high-shear mixer on low speed. Gradually increase the speed. Continue mixing for 3-4 minutes until a smooth, uniform, and glossy emulsion forms.
- Cool Down: Continue stirring occasionally as the emulsion cools. You can place the beaker in an ice bath to speed up cooling. Continue stirring until the emulsion reaches below 40°C (104°F).
- Add Phase C (Cool Down Phase): Once the lotion is below 40°C, add the preservative, Vitamin E, and fragrance/essential oil (if using). Stir well to ensure all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated.
- Check pH (Recommended): Test the pH of your finished lotion. An ideal pH for body lotions is typically between 5.0 and 6.0. Adjust if necessary using a diluted acid (like lactic acid) or base (like sodium bicarbonate solution).
- Package: Transfer the finished "Silky Radiance" lotion into clean, sterile bottles or jars.
Recommendations for Use:
- Heating: Always ensure both oil and water phases reach the specified temperature of 85°C for optimal emulsification with MONTANOV™ 202.
- Mixing: The initial slow mixing followed by gradual speed increase is crucial for achieving a stable and aesthetically pleasing emulsion. Consistent stirring during the cool-down phase also helps prevent separation.
- Consistency: The provided concentration of MONTANOV™ 202 (3.5%) will yield a rich lotion. You can adjust this percentage within the recommended range (0.5-5%) to achieve your desired consistency, from lighter gel-milks to thicker creams.
- Texture Evolution: The lotion's final texture and viscosity will develop further as it completely cools and sets over the next 24-48 hours.
- Storage: Store the finished lotion in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight, to maintain its stability and extend its shelf life.
