A Weightless Ester That Keeps Formulas Fast-Absorbing
Isopropyl palmitate is a synthetic ester derived from palmitic acid and isopropyl alcohol, recognized worldwide as one of the most widely used light-feel emollients in personal care manufacturing. The 1 kg pack size suits home labs, indie brands and small studio production runs where formulators need enough material to test a formula thoroughly or produce limited batches before scaling up. This ingredient belongs to the Emollients for Cosmetics category, which brings together fatty and ester materials that soften skin and refine the texture of finished products.
The primary global application of isopropyl palmitate lies in skincare and color cosmetics: moisturizers, lotions, serums, sunscreen emulsions, after-sun care, deodorants and antiperspirants, lipsticks, foundations and lip balms. Its low viscosity allows near-instant absorption without leaving a greasy film, which is why it is a favorite in sports creams, facial products and body lotions designed for a dry-touch finish. Beyond cosmetics, this ester is used in pharmaceutical manufacturing as a carrier for topical ointments and gels, and it also appears in certain technical lubricants and textile auxiliary formulations that require a slip layer without residue.
Isopropyl palmitate pairs well with other light esters and silicone alternatives, helping formulators fine-tune the sensory profile of a finished product. Combined with C12-C15 Alkyl Benzoate, it enhances slip and lightens the overall feel of an emulsion, a combination especially valued in formulas for oily and combination skin. To stabilize an emulsion and improve compatibility with the water phase, formulators often add Argan Amphoteric Surfactant, while a small amount of Super Sterol Liquid is used to reinforce the skin's lipid barrier and support its natural protective function.
A typical usage rate for isopropyl palmitate in cosmetic formulations ranges from 3 to 15 percent of total batch weight, depending on the desired lightness of texture and the product category. It is added to the oil phase during heating, at approximately 60 to 75 degrees Celsius, alongside other fats and emulsifiers, after which the oil phase is combined with the water phase at a matching temperature. The raw material should be stored in a tightly sealed container, in a dry area at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat sources, to keep it stable throughout its shelf life.
Fast-absorbing after-sport body lotion
Isopropyl palmitate 45 g
Cetearyl alcohol 25 g
Sweet almond oil 30 g
Aloe vera gel 350 g
Glycerin 20 g
Distilled water 520 g
Preservative 10 g
Combine
isopropyl palmitate, cetearyl alcohol and sweet almond oil in the oil phase and
heat to around 70 degrees Celsius until fully melted, while warming water and
glycerin separately to the same temperature. Pour the water phase slowly into
the oil phase while stirring continuously until a smooth, uniform lotion forms,
then cool the mixture to about 40 degrees before blending in aloe vera gel and
preservative, and finally transfer the finished lotion into clean, sealed
bottles.
