Why formulators choose this dry-touch ester for weightless skincare
C12-C15 Alkyl Benzoate is a synthetic ester widely used across the personal care industry for its dry, silky feel and fast absorption without leaving a greasy residue on the skin. This ingredient belongs to the category of emollients for cosmetics, materials designed to soften skin, improve sensory qualities of finished formulas, and help other oily ingredients spread evenly. The 25 gram packaging is ideal for home formulators, hobby production, and small pilot batches where a maker wants to test how the ester performs before committing to a larger production run.
Industrially, this ester is most commonly found in facial and body moisturizers, sunscreens, after-sun lotions, lip balms, and a wide range of color cosmetics such as foundations, concealers, and contour sticks. Its popularity comes from the way it cuts oiliness and tackiness in an emulsion, gives the product a light slip, and helps pigments disperse smoothly across the skin surface. That is exactly why makeup manufacturers rely on it heavily for BB creams and liquid foundations, where a weightless, non-mask-like finish is essential. Beyond skincare and makeup, the ingredient also appears in makeup removers and two-phase liquids, since it dissolves stubborn pigments and silicone-based products effectively.
From a formulation standpoint, this ester blends easily with silicones, plant oils, waxes, and other emollients. It is frequently paired with SeraSilk EL 60 to build a silkier, more matte film on skin, and combined with phytosterol-rich ingredients such as Plantasens Crambisol to reinforce the skin barrier and give the emulsion a more comfortable feel on sensitive skin types. It also pairs well with fatty acid esters like TEGOSOFT PC 41 MB, allowing formulators to balance the oil phase between matte and slightly glossy finishes depending on the target product.
The recommended approach is to add this ester into the oil phase during the heating stage, at roughly 60-75 degrees Celsius, alongside other oils and emollients before combining with the water phase. Typical usage levels in creams and lotions range from 2 to 10 percent of total formula weight, with color cosmetics sometimes requiring a higher share depending on the desired stick or fluid consistency. The ingredient remains stable at room temperature and should be stored in a tightly sealed container, in a dry area away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which prevents oxidation and preserves its properties throughout the shelf life.
Silky mattifying face fluid
C12-C15 Alkyl Benzoate 5 g
Jojoba oil 4 g
Plant-based emulsifier 4 g
Aloe vera gel 6 g
Distilled water 80 g
Preservative 1 g
Combine
the ester, jojoba oil, and emulsifier in one container and warm on a water bath
to 70 degrees until fully melted together. In a separate container, heat the
water and aloe gel to the same temperature. Pour the water phase into the oil
phase while mixing continuously with a hand blender until the texture turns
smooth and uniform, then cool to 40 degrees before adding the preservative.
Transfer the finished fluid into a clean container and allow it to cool
completely before its first use.
