Why a small pack of this emulsifier suits both the lab bench and the test kitchen
Tween 20 (polysorbate 20) belongs to the category of Emulsifiers
and is used whenever an oil phase and a water phase need to be joined together, or when oily and aromatic components have to be dissolved evenly in water. The 50 g pack is a practical choice for laboratory work, home studios and trial batches, letting you fine-tune dosage and check how a formula behaves before scaling up to larger production.
One of the largest real-world demands for this ingredient actually comes from research and diagnostic work: polysorbate 20 is a standard component of washing buffers used in ELISA, western blotting and similar molecular biology techniques, where it lowers surface tension and reduces unwanted protein binding. Beyond the laboratory, the substance is widely used in pharmaceutical manufacturing to solubilize oily components and vitamins in syrups and liquid dosage forms, in the food industry to disperse flavors and essential oils evenly through beverages and frozen desserts, and in cosmetic production for toners, micellar water and light water-based body sprays.
Tween 20 dissolves readily in water and blends easily with other auxiliary ingredients. It is often paired with Polysorbate 80 to build mixed systems with a specific hydrophilic-lipophilic balance, which extends the range of oils that can be stabilized. For cold-process emulsions and lightweight textures, it works well alongside Emulpharma ECOTECH, which adds stability across different storage temperatures. When a formula includes a wax-based fragrance component, such as Tuberose Wax, polysorbate 20 helps disperse the fragrance fraction evenly through the water phase of a spray or toner.
Dosage depends on the task: dissolving essential oils in water-based sprays or hydrosols usually requires around 1-5% of the total mass, while using it as a co-emulsifier in creams and lotions calls for 3-10%, and laboratory buffer applications typically use only a fraction of a percent. The emulsifier can be added to either a cold or a warm water phase heated to 40-60 degrees, depending on the rest of the formula. Store the product in a tightly closed container, in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight, and it will keep its properties for a long time.
Citrus fresh air mist
Distilled water 95 ml
Tween 20 4 g
Sweet orange essential oil 3 ml
Bergamot essential oil 2 ml
Combine
Tween 20 with the orange and bergamot essential oils and stir until the mixture
becomes uniform. Gradually pour this blend into the distilled water, shaking
the bottle after each addition until the liquid turns fully clear. Transfer the
finished mist into a clean spray bottle, keep it in a cool spot away from
light, and use within a few weeks for best results.
