Palm oil ranks among the most produced and consumed vegetable fats worldwide, with the largest share of demand coming from the food industry, where it goes into margarine, baked goods, confectionery fillings and frying applications. The second major consumer is the oleochemical sector, covering solid soap manufacturing, candle making and biodiesel production, while cosmetic use as a soap and cream ingredient forms a smaller but steady niche. In cold and hot process recipes the recommended share of palm oil is around 20-35% of the total oil phase; going higher makes bars overly hard and brittle, while a lower share reduces firmness and shortens the bar's usable life. The oil should be melted together with other solid fats at 40-50 degrees Celsius before combining with liquid oils and the lye solution. In body creams and balms it is used at 5-15% of the formula, added to the fat phase during melting at roughly 60-65 degrees alongside emulsifiers and other oils. For comparing structural behavior across batches, keeping an unrefined palm oil sample on hand is useful, since its less processed profile gives a slightly different feel in small trial batches.
