Peppermint Essential Oil, 1 L
Peppermint, Mentha piperita, is a natural hybrid of water mint and spearmint and one of the most widely grown essential oil crops. The oil is steam distilled from the aerial parts, usually at flowering. The product card lists the INCI name Peppermint essentia Oil, India as the country of production and a 1 L container.
Composition
Menthol, typically a third to a half of the oil, and menthone are the main constituents, with menthyl acetate, 1,8-cineole, isomenthone and limonene also present. Menthol is responsible for the cooling sensation on skin.
Scent and sensation
Bright, fresh and sweetly minty. On skin the oil produces a distinct cooling effect that becomes stronger as the concentration rises.
Applications
Scalp and hair care
Shampoos, scalp tonics and masks with a refreshing feel.
Foot and body care
Cooling gels, foot creams and post-workout body products with a fresh scent.
Oral care
Toothpastes and mouthwashes are traditionally mint flavoured; for these uses you need documents confirming the material is suitable.
Usage guidance
Leave-on body products usually take 0.5 to 1 % of peppermint oil, and rinse-off products up to 2 %. In facial products keep it to no more than 0.5 % and away from the eyes, and do not use it in products intended for young children. Add it below 40 °C, with a solubiliser in water-based systems.
Compatibility
Lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, lemon and grapefruit pair well with peppermint. Menthol can partly crystallise in the cold, so let the container reach room temperature before dispensing.
