Protecting Formulas from Solar Damage with Benzophenone-1 Filtration
Benzophenone-1 is a benzophenone-family compound recognized for its ability to absorb ultraviolet radiation, primarily in the UV-A range, converting harmful energy into harmless heat dissipation. This ingredient falls under the category of UV and SPF Filters for Cosmetics, and the 10 gram packaging makes it accessible for home formulators, indie brands, and small trial batches looking to test performance before scaling up production runs.
Globally, Benzophenone-1 finds its widest use not only in sun care cosmetics but also in industrial applications as a photostabilizer for varnishes, plastics, printing inks, and polymer coatings that require protection from yellowing and structural breakdown under sunlight exposure. In cosmetic manufacturing, the compound is incorporated into creams, lip balms, after-sun lotions, and hair care products, where it serves as a supporting UV absorber that reinforces the primary filtering system of a formula. It is also valued in perfumery, where it helps prevent fragrance fading and protects colorants from photodegradation over time.
Benzophenone-1 pairs effectively with other photostabilizing agents to build layered protection systems. Combined with Tinosorb S Aqua, it extends coverage across both UV-A and UV-B ranges, making it a popular choice for daytime facial creams. It is also frequently blended with Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane to improve overall photostability, since the latter tends to degrade under prolonged light exposure without a stabilizing partner. To improve dispersion within the oil phase and add water resistance to the finished product, formulators often include VP/Eicosene Copolymer in the same formula.
A typical usage rate for Benzophenone-1 in cosmetic formulations ranges from 0.5 to 3 grams per 100 grams of finished product, depending on the desired protection level and applicable regional regulations. It should be introduced during the oil phase preparation at a temperature between 60 and 70 degrees Celsius, with thorough mixing until fully dissolved. Avoid overheating beyond 80 degrees, as this may reduce filtering efficiency. Store the raw material in a tightly sealed container, in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture, to prevent premature oxidation and loss of activity.
Daily Facial Sun Protection Fluid
Distilled water 65 g
Jojoba oil 10 g
Cetearyl olivate emulsifier 5 g
Benzophenone-1 1.5 g
Niacinamide 2 g
Broad spectrum preservative 1 g
Heat
the water phase to 70 degrees Celsius, then separately heat the oil phase
containing the dissolved Benzophenone-1 to the same temperature. Combine both
phases using a hand mixer for about five minutes until a smooth emulsion forms.
Once the mixture cools to 40 degrees, blend in niacinamide and preservative,
mix for another two minutes, then transfer into a clean airtight container.
