Why cosmetic formulators reach for a skin-identical moisture binder
Sodium PCA 50% is a concentrated aqueous solution of the sodium salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, a molecule that mirrors part of the skin's own natural moisturizing factor. This is exactly why formulators across the world rely on it so heavily: it binds and holds water within the upper layers of skin far more efficiently than many conventional humectants. The 100 ml size is well suited for home cosmetic making and small trial batches, letting you test how the active behaves in a formula before scaling up. This item belongs to the Moisturizing actives category, which brings together ingredients designed for deep and lasting skin and hair hydration.
The leading industry for this raw material is undoubtedly personal care and cosmetics: facial creams, body lotions, serums, toners, masks, shampoos and conditioners, and products aimed at dry or sensitive skin. Beyond skincare, the compound is also used in color cosmetics to keep powders and foundations from feeling dry on application, and it appears in the textile and leather industries as a moisture retention agent that improves flexibility of finished materials. Pharmaceutical formulators sometimes include it in gels and ointments where prolonged tissue hydration matters.
A typical usage rate falls between 1 and 5 percent of the total formula weight, depending on the desired hydration level and the presence of other actives. It is best added during the final stage of formulation, into the water phase, at temperatures not exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, to preserve its molecular structure. It pairs well with glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and various plant extracts and oils. Many complex formulas combine it with AcquaCell, which strengthens water binding at the cellular level, or with Hydroskin 48, which extends skin hydration over a longer period. For an extra softening touch, a formula can be enriched with Cedar nut milk, which adds a light nourishing feel to the finished product.
Store the raw material in a tightly closed container, in a cool dark place away from direct sunlight and heat sources, at room temperature. Under proper storage conditions the product remains stable throughout its declared shelf life. Before introducing it into a new recipe, it is advisable to run a small trial batch to check compatibility with other ingredients, especially when combining it with acidic actives or formulas containing high alcohol concentrations.
Overnight hydrating facial gel mask
Sodium PCA 50% 4 ml
distilled water 70 ml
AcquaCell 3 ml
Hydroskin 48 8 ml
хanthan gum 0.4 g
broad spectrum preservative 1 ml
Disperse
the xanthan gum into the distilled water gradually, whisking continuously until
a smooth, lump-free gel forms, then let it hydrate fully for about fifteen
minutes. Blend in Sodium PCA, AcquaCell and Hydroskin 48 with gentle folding
motions to avoid trapping air, then stir in the preservative last. Transfer the
finished gel into a clean jar and apply a thin layer to cleansed skin before
bedtime, leaving it on overnight for deep replenishing hydration by morning.
