Ultramarine Pigment inorganic blue colorant for formulation systems and industrial applications
Ultramarine Pigment is a mineral-based inorganic colorant known for its stable blue hue and consistent performance across a wide range of formulations. It is widely used in global manufacturing due to its resistance to light exposure and temperature variation. This pigment is applied in decorative cosmetics, personal care products, soaps, candles, coatings, plastics, printing systems and various industrial compositions where reliable color output is required.
From a formulation perspective, ultramarine functions as an insoluble particulate dispersed within the base. It does not modify viscosity or structural behavior but defines the visual tone of the system. Its crystalline structure provides strong color integrity and durability under processing conditions. The pigment remains stable in both low and high temperature environments, making it suitable for different production methods.
In cosmetic use, ultramarine is incorporated into color cosmetics, creams, gel-based products and cleansing systems to create or adjust visual tone. In soap and candle manufacturing, it is used for bulk coloration and surface effects. In coatings and printing, it delivers consistent pigmentation and opacity. In polymer and plastic systems, it contributes to stable coloration during processing and end-use performance.
Functionally, ultramarine distributes throughout the formulation when properly dispersed, ensuring uniform color appearance. It does not interact chemically with the base system but requires effective mixing to prevent agglomeration. In fluid formulations, suspension support may be necessary to maintain even distribution.
In formulation practice, ultramarine is introduced during the dispersion stage, often pre-mixed with part of the base to improve integration. It is compatible with oils, waxes, silicones, polymers, resins and aqueous gel systems when appropriate dispersion methods are applied.
Usage levels depend on the required color depth and are adjusted by the formulator based on system characteristics.
Example formulation: Oil-based decorative blend with blue pigment
Sunflower oil 50 g
Caprylic/capric triglycerides 20 g
Isododecane 10 g
Ultramarine Pigment 3 g
Tocopherol 2 g
Fragrance 15 g
Process: base oils and solvents are combined and mixed until uniform. The pigment is pre-dispersed in a portion of the oil and then incorporated into the main batch under continuous mixing. Tocopherol and fragrance are added. The system is mixed until even color distribution is achieved.
Example formulation: Water-based gel with mineral colorant
Purified water 69 ml
Hydroxyethylcellulose 1 g
Propanediol 5 g
Ultramarine Pigment 3 g
Calendula extract 10 ml
Preservative 1 g
pH adjuster 11 g
Process: hydroxyethylcellulose is dispersed in water to form a gel base. Propanediol is added and mixed until uniform. The pigment is pre-dispersed and incorporated into the gel system. Calendula extract and preservative are added. The formulation is adjusted to the required pH and mixed until homogeneous.
Ultramarine Pigment is used in formulations requiring consistent blue coloration, stability and compatibility across multiple systems. It enables controlled color performance in cosmetic, decorative and industrial applications.
