How a Lightweight Ester Transforms Skin Feel in Cosmetic Formulas
Isopropyl palmitate is one of the most widely used synthetic esters in global cosmetic manufacturing, found in creams, lotions, sunscreens, color cosmetics and makeup removers across markets. This ingredient belongs to the Emollients for Cosmetics category, and its main function is to give formulas a light, fast-absorbing feel without leaving a greasy film on the skin. The 50 g size is well suited for home-based cosmetic making and small trial batches before scaling up to larger production runs.
Across the world, isopropyl palmitate is especially valued in sunscreen formulations, where it helps UV filters spread evenly over the skin, and in color cosmetics as a solvent for pigments in lipsticks, foundations and eyeshadows. Makeup removers and cleansing oils often rely on this ester for its ability to dissolve sebum and residual makeup. Aftershave products and body lotions benefit from the reduced tackiness it brings when combined with heavier oils. In household chemical formulations it sometimes serves as a plasticizer, while pharmaceutical ointment bases use it as an auxiliary component that improves spreadability on application.
Typical dosage ranges from 3 to 15 grams per 100 grams of finished product, depending on the desired lightness of the final texture. It is introduced during the oil phase stage together with other oils and emollients at a temperature of 65-75 degrees Celsius, before combining with the water phase to form the emulsion. Isopropyl palmitate pairs well with other esters such as Myristyl Myristate, which adds a velvety, matte finish, and with Softy Touch, which brings extra softness and silky glide to the skin. For richer, more protective textures it is frequently combined with Vegetable Petrolatum 162, balancing lightness with occlusive performance.
Store isopropyl palmitate in a tightly sealed container, in a dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources, to preserve its stability and functional properties over time.
