Rebuilding the Skin's Natural Lipid Shield with Glycosphingolipids
Glycosphingolipid Complex is a concentrated blend of lipid molecules that naturally occur within the stratum corneum, acting as the mortar between skin cells to lock in moisture and keep external irritants out. This 10 g format is well suited for formulation testing, pilot batches and small home-based production runs where precise dosing of a high-value active ingredient matters most. The ingredient belongs to the Skin Protection and Restoration category, which brings together actives focused on strengthening the hydrolipidic barrier and reducing transepidermal water loss.
The strongest commercial demand for lipid-restoring complexes comes from skincare aimed at dry, sensitive and mature skin types, as well as products designed for reactive or atopic-prone skin. Formulators rely on this kind of concentrate in facial creams, body lotions, after-sun and post-hair-removal treatments, and in gentle infant skincare lines where the skin barrier is still developing and needs extra reinforcement. Another significant application is in professional spa and clinical skincare, where such complexes are added to intensive recovery serums used after peels, microneedling and other resurfacing treatments that temporarily compromise the barrier.
Within a formulation, the complex should be added during the cool-down phase, at temperatures not exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, since excessive heat can degrade the delicate lipid structures. A typical usage rate ranges from 1 to 3 grams per 100 grams of finished product, though the exact concentration should be adjusted based on the target formula and desired performance. It pairs particularly well with ceramides, plant oils, cholesterol and hyaluronic acid. A strong combination can be built with Ecoskin, which reinforces the regenerative profile of the formula, while blending it with Micellar Casein 90% adds a film-forming, firming effect suited for mature skin formulas. For calming, redness-reducing products, many formulators also introduce Sepicalm S alongside the lipid complex.
Store the complex in a cool, dry place away from direct light and heat sources, in a tightly sealed container to prevent oxidation of the lipid fractions. Once opened, use within the manufacturer's recommended timeframe and always handle with clean, dry tools to avoid contamination.
Barrier Repair Facial Cream
Glycosphingolipid Complex - 2 g
Squalane oil - 12 g
Shea butter - 8 g
Emulsifying wax - 6 g
Aloe vera water - 50 g
Preservative - 3 g
Melt
the shea butter and emulsifying wax together with the squalane oil over a water
bath until fully combined, keeping the temperature around 70 degrees Celsius.
Separately warm the aloe vera water to the same temperature, then slowly pour
it into the oil phase while whisking continuously until a smooth, thick emulsion
forms. Allow the mixture to cool down to 35-38 degrees while stirring, then
blend in the glycosphingolipid complex and preservative until fully dissolved.
Transfer the finished cream into a clean jar and let it stabilize for 24 hours
before first use.
