Why Micronized Titanium Dioxide Dispersion Simplifies Sunscreen Manufacturing
COVASCREEN WTI is a ready-to-use dispersion of micronized titanium dioxide, formulated to be blended directly into the water or emulsion phase of sun care products without the lengthy pre-dispersion step that raw powder pigments usually require. This makes it a practical choice for laboratories scaling up from small trial batches to consistent production runs. The product belongs to the broader category of UV and SPF Filters for Cosmetics, which brings together physical and chemical screens used to shield skin from ultraviolet radiation.
The main industrial use of this raw material is in sunscreen creams, lotions, sprays and sticks for face and body, as well as in daily moisturizers and BB creams carrying an SPF claim. Titanium dioxide works by reflecting and scattering UVB rays right on the skin surface, which is why formulators frequently choose it for baby and sensitive skin lines that avoid chemical filters. Beyond skincare, the dispersion is also used in color cosmetics with sun protection, such as tinted foundations, pressed powders and makeup primers, where a light mattifying and brightening visual effect is welcome alongside UV defense.
To achieve broader spectrum coverage, manufacturers commonly pair COVASCREEN WTI with zinc oxide, for example Z-COTE micronized zinc oxide, which extends protection into the UVA range and reinforces the overall SPF rating of the formula. This combination is typical in professional sun care lines that need to balance transparency on skin with a strong protection factor. To stabilize the filters against photodegradation and add antioxidant support, many recipes also include Gamma Oryzanol, a natural rice bran derived compound known for its UV-stabilizing activity. When a formula needs extra opacity or brightening without additional sun protection load, formulators reach for Micronized Titanium Dioxide on its own.
A typical usage rate for COVASCREEN WTI ranges from 5 to 25 percent of the finished formula, depending on the target SPF value and whether other filters are included. It should be introduced during the water or oil phase build at around 60 to 70 degrees Celsius under continuous stirring, ensuring even pigment distribution and preventing clumping. Once the filter is fully incorporated, the emulsion should be cooled gradually, with heat-sensitive actives and preservatives added only at the final cooling stage.
The raw material should be stored in its original, tightly sealed container, in a dry area at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. The 1 kg pack size is aimed at studio and semi-industrial production lines, allowing manufacturers to maintain a steady sun care output without frequent reordering while keeping batch consistency during recipe scale-up.
Daily Facial Sun Fluid
COVASCREEN WTI - 110 g
Distilled water - 580 ml
Squalane oil - 35 g
Plant-based emulsifier - 32 g
Z-COTE zinc oxide - 18 g
Gamma Oryzanol - 5 g
Broad spectrum preservative - 8 ml
Fragrance oil - 3 ml
Heat
the water phase to 70 degrees Celsius and gradually add COVASCREEN WTI under
vigorous stirring until the pigment is fully dispersed. Separately melt the
emulsifier with squalane oil, bring it to the same temperature, then combine
both phases while mixing continuously until a smooth emulsion forms. Once the
mixture cools to 40 degrees, blend in the zinc oxide, gamma oryzanol,
preservative and fragrance, mix thoroughly, and fill the fluid into opaque containers.
