Instructions for Lotion Preparation:
- Sanitization: Thoroughly sanitize all your equipment, including beakers, stirrers, and lotion bottles/jars, using isopropyl alcohol. Allow everything to air dry completely.
- Phase A (Water Phase): In a heat-resistant beaker, combine the distilled water and glycerin. Heat this phase in a water bath to 70-75°C (158-167°F).
- Phase B (Oil Phase): In a separate heat-resistant beaker, combine the emulsifying wax, sweet almond oil, shea butter, TEGOSOFT® PC 41 MB, and cetyl alcohol. Heat this phase in the same water bath to 70-75°C (158-167°F) until all solid ingredients are completely melted and the oils are clear.
- Emulsification: Once both phases reach the target temperature, slowly pour the hot water phase (Phase A) into the hot oil phase (Phase B) while continuously stirring with a hand mixer or stick blender on low speed. Continue blending for several minutes until a stable emulsion forms and the mixture begins to thicken.
- Cooling Down: Remove the beaker from the water bath and continue stirring intermittently as the lotion cools. This helps ensure a smooth, homogeneous texture. Stir until the temperature drops below 40°C (104°F).
- Phase C (Cool Down Phase): Once the lotion has cooled sufficiently (below 40°C/104°F), add the preservative, fragrance oil (if using), and Vitamin E. Stir thoroughly to ensure all ingredients are evenly distributed.
- pH Adjustment (Optional but Recommended): Check the pH of your lotion. For body lotions, a pH of 5.0-6.0 is generally ideal. Adjust if necessary using diluted lactic acid (to lower pH) or a dilute baking soda solution (to raise pH).
- Packaging: Transfer the finished lotion into clean, sanitized bottles or jars.
Recommendations for Application and Use:
- Inclusion Rate of TEGOSOFT® PC 41 MB: The 5% inclusion rate in this lotion recipe is excellent for providing noticeable improvements in spreadability and skin feel without making the product feel greasy. You can adjust this percentage (within the 1-5% range for creams) based on your desired sensory profile.
- Adding to Oil Phase: Always add TEGOSOFT® PC 41 MB to the oil phase of your emulsion, as it is oil-soluble.
- Temperature Sensitivity: While robust, adding it during the heating phase (Phase B) ensures proper integration into the emulsion.
- Sensory Benefits: Pay attention to how the lotion feels during application – you'll notice the enhanced spreadability and reduced stickiness immediately, characteristic of TEGOSOFT® PC 41 MB.
- Storage: Store the finished lotion in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight, to maintain its stability and effectiveness.
- Patch Test: Always perform a small patch test on your skin before widespread use to check for any sensitivities or allergic reactions to the finished product.
