What keeps skin cells hydrated when water alone is not enough
Natural Moisturizing Factor is a complex of substances naturally present in the upper layers of skin, responsible for holding water inside the corneocytes of the stratum corneum. When this balance is disrupted by age, climate, harsh cleansers or frequent washing, skin starts flaking and losing its plumpness. Replenishing this complex from outside is one of the most physiological ways to restore the skin's own capacity to retain moisture, which is why this ingredient belongs to the Moisturizing actives category, gathering substances with proven ability to work at the level of the epidermal barrier.
The main application of this raw material is the formulation of skincare products: creams, serums, emulsions, toners and masks for face and body. The ingredient is in demand for products aimed at dry, dehydrated and mature skin, as well as after-sun and after-hair-removal treatments and lines for sensitive, irritation-prone skin. Beyond cosmetics, the compound is also used in pharmaceutical and dermatological formulations, where gentle correction of barrier function without irritation is important. A smaller share of demand comes from color cosmetics, where it is added to foundations and BB creams to prevent a tight, uncomfortable feel on the skin.
The 10 ml packaging is convenient for home-based cosmetic making and small trial batches, when it is important to test the ingredient's performance in a specific formula before scaling up production. It is recommended to introduce it into the water phase of an emulsion during the cooling stage, at a temperature not exceeding 40 degrees, to avoid degrading heat-sensitive compounds. The typical usage rate in a finished product ranges from 2 to 5 percent, depending on the desired intensity of hydration and the type of formula.
The ingredient pairs well with other moisturizing actives, reinforcing the combined effect. For instance, together with liquid hyaluronic acid 1% it delivers a dual action: hyaluronate acts as a water magnet on the skin surface, while the natural moisturizing factor strengthens the barrier from within, reducing transepidermal water loss. A good combination is also achieved with Omega-CHS-Activator F, which additionally supports the lipid barrier of the skin and makes the result more stable over time. For targeted care around the eyes, it can be combined with patches based on PatcH2O, where a fast, localized hydrating effect is needed.
The ingredient should be stored in a tightly closed container, in a cool place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Once the bottle is opened, it is best to use the contents within a reasonable period, avoiding contamination or moisture entering the packaging, in order to keep the formula stable.
