A Sulfate-Free Way to Formulate Gentle Cleansing Bars
The Crystal SLS Free Stephenson soap base, sold in a 1 kg block, was created for formulators who need to remove harsh foaming agents from their recipes. Unlike classic clear bases, this one contains no sodium lauryl sulfate, which makes the finished bar gentler on skin and suitable for sensitive-skin lines, children's products, and formulas aimed at people prone to dryness or irritation. This product belongs to the Stephenson Soap Base range, well known among manufacturers for predictable melting behavior and stable results when active ingredients are introduced.
The main use of this base is crafting solid cleansing bars in small-batch and studio production, where the priority is a mild formula rather than glassy transparency. A 1 kg block is convenient for testing new recipes with oils, fragrances, or botanical extracts without committing a large volume of raw material. The base also blends well with other bases in the same family: for a richer lather, part of the recipe can be diluted with Crystal WSLS Soap Base, while for a more nourishing feel formulators often add Crystal Shea soap base enriched with shea butter.
The raw material is melted in a water bath or a dedicated melter at roughly 60-70°C, avoiding overheating and vigorous stirring that traps air bubbles. Active additives such as carrier oils, essential oils, glycerin, botanical extracts, pigments, and mica are best introduced once the melt cools to about 55-58°C, preserving their beneficial properties and preventing separation of the mass. A common dosage for carrier oils is 20 to 50 grams per kilogram of base, while essential oils are typically used at 5 to 15 milliliters depending on scent strength. Fragrance oils are usually added at around 10-20 ml per kilogram, and dry pigments only in fractions of a gram due to their high tinting strength.
This base pairs nicely with exfoliating fillers such as ground oatmeal, coffee grounds, or cosmetic clay, allowing manufacturers to create scrub-type bars without losing the mild cleansing character. For men's grooming lines, producers sometimes combine it with the Shaving base Crystal Shaving Base (SSB), which allows a matching pair of products — a solid bar and a shaving cream with a similar texture and fragrance profile.
Store the base in a dry, cool place inside its original sealed packaging, away from direct sunlight and heat sources, since prolonged exposure to moisture or high temperatures can affect its plasticity and uniform structure. When storage conditions are respected, the base keeps its declared properties throughout the shelf life stated by the manufacturer.
Gentle Oat and Lavender Cleansing Bar
Crystal SLS Free base — 800 g
Sweet almond oil — 30 ml
Lavender essential oil — 10 ml
Ground oatmeal — 20 g
Cosmetic glycerin — 15 ml
Vitamin E (tocopherol) — 5 ml
Cut the base into cubes and melt it in a water bath at about 65°C, avoiding foam formation on the surface. Remove from heat and let it cool to 55-58°C, then stir in the almond oil, glycerin, and vitamin E one at a time. Finally, add the lavender essential oil and ground oatmeal, mixing gently until evenly distributed. Pour the mixture into molds, allow it to set at room temperature for several hours, then carefully unmold the finished bars.
