Unrefined sesame oil natural lipid raw material for food formulations cosmetic systems and functional oil bases
Unrefined sesame oil is a mechanically pressed vegetable oil that retains its original composition due to the absence of deep refining. It is used as a natural lipid component in formulation systems where a compositionally rich and structurally active oil phase is required. This material is widely applied in food processing, nutraceutical products, cosmetic formulations, SPA applications and selected industrial processes that utilize minimally processed plant oils.
From a formulation perspective, unrefined sesame oil is composed of triglycerides with a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids along with naturally occurring minor compounds preserved during pressing. This gives the oil a more active profile compared to refined carrier oils and allows it to contribute to the formulation beyond basic lipid support. Because of its preserved structure, it is typically processed under moderate temperature conditions to maintain stability.
In global food systems, unrefined sesame oil is used in cold sauces, dressings, finishing oils and specialty blends where minimal heat exposure is required. In nutraceutical applications, it is incorporated into oil concentrates, encapsulated formats and liquid blends. In cosmetic formulations, it is used in creams, emulsions, balms, oil serums and hair care systems. In SPA applications, it is included in massage oils and aromatic blends. In candle and fragrance production, it may serve as part of an oil phase supporting dispersion of aromatic components. In industrial environments, it is used as a plant derived raw material in processes where unrefined oils are acceptable.
Functionally, unrefined sesame oil forms a compositionally active lipid phase that influences flow properties, density and distribution of lipophilic ingredients. In emulsions, it contributes to phase formation and system cohesion, while in oil blends it ensures compatibility and uniform mixing. It does not act as a thickener but significantly affects formulation behavior and texture.
In formulation practice, the oil is introduced into the oil phase and combined with other lipid ingredients under controlled conditions. It is compatible with emulsifiers, waxes, oil soluble actives and other vegetable oils when processed appropriately. Moderate processing temperatures are recommended to preserve its composition.
Usage levels are defined in technical documentation and adjusted by the formulator depending on application requirements.
Example formulation: Cream system with natural lipid base
Purified water 56 ml
Unrefined sesame oil 24 g
Macadamia oil 6 g
Montanov 68 emulsifier 6 g
Cetyl alcohol 3 g
Glycerin 4 g
Preservative 1 g
Panthenol 2 g
Process: prepare water and oil phases separately. Heat to the minimum temperature required for emulsification. Add sesame oil and macadamia oil to the oil phase together with emulsifier. Combine phases and mix until a uniform emulsion forms. During cooling, add glycerin, panthenol and preservative. Continue mixing until stable.
Example formulation: Base oil blend for food and nutraceutical systems
Unrefined sesame oil 55 g
Olive oil 45 g
Vitamin E 1 g
Process: combine oils and mix until fully homogeneous. Add vitamin E and continue mixing until stabilized. The blend can then be used as a functional oil base.
Unrefined sesame oil is used as a natural plant lipid ingredient across food, nutraceutical, cosmetic and industrial formulation systems, providing a compositionally rich and stable oil phase when handled under appropriate conditions.
