Unrefined sesame oil natural plant lipid base for food formulations cosmetic systems and oil blends
Unrefined sesame oil is a plant-derived lipid obtained by mechanical pressing of sesame seeds without deep refining. This preserves its native composition and makes it suitable for formulation systems where a naturally rich oil phase is required. It is widely used in food production, nutraceutical products, cosmetic formulations, SPA applications and selected technical processes that rely on minimally processed plant oils.
From a formulation perspective, unrefined sesame oil consists of triglycerides with a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids along with naturally occurring minor fractions retained during pressing. This creates a compositionally active lipid profile compared to neutral refined oils. Because of this, the oil is typically processed under moderate temperature conditions to maintain stability and preserve its functional properties.
In global food applications, unrefined sesame oil is used in dressings, sauces, finishing oils and specialty blends where intensive heat processing is not required. In nutraceutical systems, it is incorporated into oil concentrates, encapsulated formats and liquid formulations. In cosmetic products, it is used in emulsions, creams, balms, oil serums and hair care systems. In SPA applications, it is applied in massage blends and aromatic compositions. In candle and fragrance manufacturing, it can be included as part of an oil phase supporting distribution of aromatic compounds. In industrial processes, it is used as a plant-based input in technical formulations where unrefined oils are acceptable.
Functionally, unrefined sesame oil forms a compositionally rich lipid phase and influences flow behavior, density and distribution of lipophilic components. In emulsions, it contributes to phase formation and structural consistency, while in oil blends it ensures compatibility and uniform mixing. It does not act as a thickening agent but significantly affects formulation behavior.
In formulation practice, the oil is introduced into the oil phase and combined with other lipid ingredients. It is compatible with emulsifiers, waxes, oil-soluble actives and other plant oils when processed under appropriate conditions. Moderate processing temperatures are recommended to maintain composition stability.
Usage levels are defined in technical specifications and adjusted by the formulator depending on the intended application.
Example formulation: Emulsion with natural lipid base
Purified water 57 ml
Unrefined sesame oil 23 g
Almond oil 7 g
Emulsan emulsifier 6 g
Cetyl alcohol 3 g
Glycerin 4 g
Preservative 1 g
Panthenol 2 g
Process: prepare water and oil phases separately. Heat to the minimum required temperature for emulsification. Add sesame oil and almond oil to the oil phase together with emulsifier. Combine phases and mix until a uniform emulsion is formed. During cooling, add glycerin, panthenol and preservative. Continue mixing until stable.
Example formulation: Oil blend for food and nutraceutical systems
Unrefined sesame oil 60 g
Grape seed oil 40 g
Vitamin E 1 g
Process: combine oils and mix until fully homogeneous. Add vitamin E and continue mixing until stabilized. The blend is then used as a functional oil base.
Unrefined sesame oil is used as a natural plant lipid ingredient across food, nutraceutical, cosmetic and industrial formulation systems, providing a stable and compositionally rich oil phase when processed under controlled conditions.
