Unrefined sesame oil plant lipid raw material for food systems cosmetic formulations and functional blends
Unrefined sesame oil is a minimally processed vegetable oil obtained by pressing sesame seeds without intensive refining. This preserves its natural composition and makes it suitable for formulations where a compositionally rich lipid phase is required. It is widely used in food processing, nutraceutical systems, cosmetic products, SPA applications and selected industrial processes that benefit from plant based oils with preserved structure.
From a formulation standpoint, unrefined sesame oil consists of triglycerides with a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids together with naturally occurring minor components retained during pressing. This results in a more active lipid profile compared to neutral refined oils. Because of its composition, it is typically handled under moderate processing conditions to maintain stability and preserve functionality.
In food applications, unrefined sesame oil is used in dressings, sauces, finishing oils and specialty blends where minimal thermal processing is required. In nutraceutical systems, it is applied in oil concentrates, encapsulated formats and liquid blends. In cosmetic formulations, it is incorporated into emulsions, creams, oil serums and hair care systems. In SPA applications, it is used in massage blends and aromatic compositions. In candle and fragrance production, it may be included as part of an oil phase supporting distribution of aromatic components. In industrial applications, it is used as a plant derived raw material in technical formulations.
Functionally, unrefined sesame oil forms a compositionally rich lipid phase and influences density, flow behavior and distribution of lipophilic ingredients. In emulsions, it contributes to phase formation and system stability, while in oil blends it ensures compatibility and uniform mixing. It does not act as a thickener but affects the overall behavior and performance of the formulation.
In formulation practice, the oil is introduced into the oil phase and combined with other lipid components under controlled temperature conditions. It is compatible with emulsifiers, waxes, oil soluble actives and other vegetable oils when properly processed.
Usage levels are defined by technical specifications and adjusted by the formulator depending on application requirements.
Example formulation: Mild emulsion with unrefined sesame oil
Purified water 58 ml
Unrefined sesame oil 22 g
Jojoba oil 8 g
Olivem 1000 emulsifier 6 g
Cetyl alcohol 3 g
Glycerin 4 g
Preservative 1 g
Panthenol 2 g
Process: prepare water and oil phases separately. Heat to the minimum required temperature for emulsification. Add sesame oil and jojoba oil to the oil phase. Combine phases and mix until a uniform emulsion forms. During cooling, add glycerin, panthenol and preservative. Continue mixing until stable.
Example formulation: Functional oil blend for food and nutraceutical systems
Unrefined sesame oil 65 g
Pumpkin seed oil 35 g
Vitamin E 1 g
Process: combine oils under gentle mixing until homogeneous. Add vitamin E and continue mixing until stabilized. The blend can then be used as a functional oil base.
Unrefined sesame oil is used as a compositionally rich plant lipid ingredient across food, nutraceutical, cosmetic and industrial formulation systems, providing a stable and functional oil phase when processed under appropriate conditions.
