Mandarin Essential Oil, Cold Pressed
Mandarin, Citrus reticulata, originates in Southeast Asia and has long been grown in Italy, notably in Sicily and Calabria. The essential oil is obtained by cold pressing the fruit peel. The product card lists the INCI name Citrus reticulata Blanco essentia Oil, Italy as the country of production and a 1 L container.
Mandarin oil is traded as green, yellow or red depending on fruit ripeness. The type of this lot is not stated, so ask the supplier if it matters for your product.
Composition
Limonene makes up the largest share, followed by gamma-terpinene and alpha- and beta-pinene. A small amount of methyl N-methylanthranilate gives mandarin its typical sweet, slightly floral depth.
Odour
Sweet, juicy and soft, warmer and rounder than lemon or grapefruit.
Applications
Creams and lotions
A crowd-pleasing citrus scent for body and hand care.
Rinse-off products
Shower gels, shampoos and bubble baths.
Home fragrance and candles
Citrus diffuser blends and scented candles.
Usage guidance
Mandarin oil is used at 0.5 to 1.5 % in leave-on products and up to 2 % in rinse-off products. Add it during cool-down below 40 °C, with a solubiliser in water-based systems. Unlike bergamot or expressed lime, cold-pressed mandarin oil is generally not regarded as phototoxic.
Oxidation and labelling
Limonene oxidises quickly in air, and oxidised limonene is a known irritant and sensitiser. Use opened containers promptly, add an antioxidant to your products and declare limonene as an allergen under EU rules where thresholds are exceeded.
Compatibility
Vanilla, lavender, neroli, ylang ylang, cardamom and clove all pair well with mandarin.
