Building Long-Lasting Cream Textures with Lanette SX Emulsifying Wax
Lanette SX is a self-emulsifying wax that belongs to the section of Emulsifiers, gathering materials designed to create stable oil-in-water systems. Chemically it is a modified cetostearyl alcohol capable of emulsifying oil and water phases on its own, without requiring a separate co-emulsifier. The 1 kg packaging is aimed at studio-scale and small industrial manufacturing, where a consistent quality of raw material matters for repeatable production batches.
The largest demand for Lanette SX comes from the manufacturing of oil-in-water cosmetic and dermatological emulsions - moisturizing creams, nourishing lotions, body and facial emulsions, hair conditioners. The compound is also widely used in the pharmaceutical industry for topical ointment bases, where the absence of phase separation over the entire shelf life is critical. Beyond cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, the material finds use in technical pastes and household cream formulations that require thickening and stabilization of a water-oil system.
The working mechanism of Lanette SX relies on forming a dense crystalline network within the water phase that mechanically traps oil droplets and prevents coalescence over time. Because of this property, the wax is often combined with other emulsifiers to fine-tune texture. It pairs well with Polawax when a lighter emulsion feel is desired, and with Emulpharma IXL for producing dense nourishing bases with improved stability under storage temperature fluctuations. A small amount of rose wax is sometimes added to the oil phase for extra softness and a subtle scent.
The recommended dosage of Lanette SX in formulations ranges from 3 to 8 percent of the total emulsion mass, depending on the desired firmness and oil phase content. The wax is introduced into the oil phase together with vegetable oils and other waxes at a temperature of 70-75 degrees Celsius, after which the oil phase is combined with a water phase preheated to the same temperature under constant stirring. Cooling should proceed with continuous mixing down to room temperature, allowing the crystalline network to form evenly and providing long-term stability of the finished product.
Lanette SX should be stored in a dry room at room temperature, in a tightly closed container protected from direct sunlight and foreign odors, as the material can adsorb volatile aromatic compounds from the surrounding environment. Under proper storage conditions the shelf life of the raw material is fairly long, making the 1 kg pack convenient for regular production cycles without risk of spoiling the remaining stock.
Nourishing hand and body cream with Lanette SX
Distilled water 320 ml
Shea butter 35 g
Sweet almond oil 25 g
Lanette SX 28 g
Glycerin 20 ml
Lavender essential oil 3 ml
Preservative per manufacturer instructions
Heat the water phase together with glycerin to 75 degrees Celsius, and separately melt the oil phase containing shea butter, almond oil and Lanette SX until fully dissolved. Pour the oil phase into the water phase under continuous stirring, cool the mixture with steady mixing down to 40 degrees, then add the essential oil and preservative, blend until homogeneous and transfer into a clean container.
