Preservative system for pilot batches and formulation development
Developing a stable water-based personal care product requires more than selecting a preservative by name. The preservation strategy must match the final pH, water activity, botanical load, surfactant system, packaging, and manufacturing process of the complete formulation.
Euxyl K 712 is a ready-to-process liquid blend with the INCI Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Aqua. It is designed for acidic cosmetic and personal care systems and provides activity against bacteria, yeasts, and molds when used under appropriate formulation conditions.
The 30 ml format is particularly practical for formulation trials, pilot batches, R&D work, independent cosmetic development, and small-scale product testing. It allows a formulator to evaluate preservative compatibility before moving to larger production quantities.
The recommended use concentration is 0.5-1.5%, while the working pH range is approximately 3.0-5.5.
Alternative systems can be compared in the Preservatives and Antioxidants category.
Why final pH matters
Sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate perform most effectively under acidic conditions. This makes final pH control an essential part of formulation development.
Measuring the pH of purified water before production is not sufficient. Botanical extracts, hydrosols, humectants, surfactants, proteins, salts, and active ingredients can shift the pH after incorporation.
For example, Cucumber Glycolic Extract is a water-compatible botanical material that can be used in toners, cleansing systems, gels, and other aqueous formulations. Once botanical ingredients are added, the complete batch should be checked again.
A water-soluble functional ingredient such as D-Panthenol can also be combined with Euxyl K 712 in suitable acidic systems.
Applications in personal care development
Euxyl K 712 can be considered for leave-on, rinse-off, and wet wipe formulations.
Typical applications include facial toners, lightweight serums, lotions, gels, shampoos, conditioners, facial cleansers, body washes, creams, and other products containing an aqueous phase.
The system is compatible with anionic, cationic, and nonionic formulations, providing flexibility when developing different types of personal care products.
Preservative performance, however, cannot be evaluated independently from the rest of the composition. A simple toner and a botanical-rich cleansing formula may require different development and validation work even when the same preservative concentration is used.
Incorporation during processing
Because Euxyl K 712 is supplied as a liquid, it can be added directly to suitable aqueous systems with adequate mixing.
In cold-process products, it may be incorporated after the major water-soluble ingredients have been dispersed.
For heated emulsions or cleansing systems, addition during the cooling stage is often convenient. Production temperatures should remain below 80°C, and prolonged unnecessary heating should be avoided.
After the preservative has been fully distributed, the pH of the finished batch should be measured.
If adjustment is required, Lactic Acid 80% can be used as a pH-adjusting material. For laboratory work, preparing a diluted acid solution allows significantly better control than adding concentrated acid directly to the batch.
Prototype cucumber hydration toner
The following formula is designed as a 100 g laboratory trial.
Purified water - up to 100 g
Cucumber Glycolic Extract - 3 g
Vegetable glycerin - 4 g
D-Panthenol - 2 g
Euxyl K 712 - 1 g
10% Lactic Acid solution - as required for pH adjustment
Place most of the purified water into a clean mixing vessel.
Add vegetable glycerin and stir until the phase is uniform.
Introduce D-Panthenol and continue mixing until evenly distributed.
Add 3 g of Cucumber Glycolic Extract. The extract is compatible with water-based systems and can be incorporated without an oil-phase solubilization step.
Add 1 g of Euxyl K 712 and mix thoroughly.
Measure the final pH. A practical development target for this prototype is approximately pH 4.8-5.2 while remaining within the specified working range.
If the value is too high, prepare a 10% aqueous dilution of Lactic Acid 80%. Add it gradually in small portions, mix thoroughly, and measure the pH after every adjustment.
Do not assign a fixed amount of acid before testing the actual batch. Raw material variability can change the amount required.
Once the target pH is achieved, add purified water to bring the total batch weight to exactly 100 g.
Allow the formulation to equilibrate and check the pH again before evaluating the prototype.
A practical size for R&D work
The 30 ml package is well suited to early-stage formulation work where developers need to test more than one prototype.
Different formulas can be evaluated for pH stability, clarity, odor, color, viscosity, compatibility with botanical materials, and interaction with the selected packaging before a larger quantity of preservative is required.
For commercial products, the presence of Euxyl K 712 should not be treated as an automatic shelf-life guarantee. Preservation performance depends on the complete formulation, manufacturing hygiene, raw material quality, packaging, and intended consumer use.
Where appropriate, the finished product should undergo relevant microbiological testing and stability evaluation before the shelf life is established.
This makes the 30 ml format a practical option for cosmetic laboratories, indie brands, private label development, formulation consultants, and manufacturers preparing pilot batches before scaling a successful formula.
