Why a small preservative vial matters for trial cosmetic batches
Hydroxan CH is a broad-spectrum preservative designed to protect water-based and emulsion cosmetic formulations against the growth of bacteria, yeasts and molds. This ingredient belongs to the Preservatives and Antioxidants section, gathering products meant to extend shelf life and maintain the stability of finished goods throughout storage and use. The 5 ml packaging suits home cosmetic making and small trial batches, allowing formulators to test how the preservative performs in a specific recipe before committing to larger quantities of raw material.
The primary field of application for Hydroxan CH is the cosmetic industry, covering facial and body skincare, hair care products, creams, lotions, serums and gels. The preservative is also used in wet wipes manufacturing, hygiene products and certain water-based household chemical formulations that require reliable protection against microbial contamination throughout their shelf life. Global demand for this type of preservative continues to grow as regulatory requirements around cosmetic safety tighten and as mild, low-irritation formulas increasingly need proper stabilization to remain safe over time.
Hydroxan CH should be added at the final stage of preparing an emulsion or water phase, at a temperature not exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, to avoid degrading its active components under heat exposure. Typical dosage ranges from 0.5 to 1.5 percent of the total formula weight, though the exact amount should be adjusted based on the product composition and expected storage conditions. The preservative pairs well with other stabilizing ingredients, such as Pentylene Glycol, which enhances antimicrobial protection while also functioning as a humectant within the formula. For formulations with a higher contamination risk, such as clay-based or botanical extract products, combining Hydroxan CH with Sharomix 708 provides a broader protective spectrum.
When working with products containing oils and fatty components in higher concentrations, it is worth considering combined use with Mikrokill ЕСТ, which performs effectively in oil-based and emulsion systems. Combining preservatives with different mechanisms of action reduces the risk of microbial resistance developing over time and improves overall product protection reliability.
Hydroxan CH should be stored in a tightly closed container, in a cool place away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity, at stable room temperature without sudden fluctuations. Under proper storage conditions the preservative retains its activity throughout the shelf life stated by the manufacturer.
Gentle hydrating facial gel
Distilled water 65 ml
Aloe vera gel 15 ml
Glycerin 4 ml
Xanthan gum 1 g
Hydroxan CH 1 ml
Essential oil of chamomile 3 drops
Disperse
the xanthan gum gradually into distilled water while stirring continuously to
avoid clumping, then let the mixture rest for a few minutes until fully
hydrated. Warm the mixture gently to about 35 degrees, blend in the aloe vera
gel and glycerin, then remove from heat and allow it to cool to room
temperature before adding Hydroxan CH and the chamomile essential oil. Stir
until fully combined and transfer the finished gel into a sterile pump bottle
for storage.
