Cubeb Oil, 100 ml Bottle
This bottle is sized for development work: dose finding, comparing cubeb with black and pink pepper, and stability samples. The oil is steam distilled from the dried unripe fruits of Piper cubeba, a pepper-family climber. The product card lists Germany as the country of production and the INCI name Cubeb Ventós Essential Oil.
What it smells like
Woody and peppery with a cool camphor nuance over a warm, dry base. It lacks the heat of black pepper, so it slips easily into citrus and woody accords.
Main constituents
Sesquiterpenes dominate, notably the cubebenes, copaene and beta-caryophyllene; sabinene and alpha-pinene are typical monoterpenes.
Useful for
Fragrance blends
A spicy top note in masculine and woody perfumes.
Scalp care
Shampoos and tonics with a spicy accent.
Beard care
Oils and balms with a warm peppery profile.
Dosage
0.5 to 1 % in leave-on products, up to 2 % in rinse-off products. Add below 40 °C; an antioxidant in the oil phase protects the scent.
Partners
Bergamot, lime, cardamom, ginger, sandalwood and vetiver.
Product data
The oil is made from unripe Piper cubeba fruits and is listed under the INCI name Cubeb Ventós Essential Oil. You may also see it called false pepper or Cubeba officinalis. It comes in a 100 ml bottle.
Example: solid cologne, 30 g
Melt 6 g of candelilla wax with 14 g of fractionated coconut oil and 8.4 g of jojoba oil to make 30 g of cologne. Once the mixture has cooled slightly, add 0.6 g of cubeb essential oil, 0.6 g of distilled lime essential oil and 0.4 g of cedarwood essential oil.
Melt the wax with the coconut oil over a water bath, then add the jojoba and remove from heat. At about 50 °C stir in the essential oils and pour into small tins. Allow 24 hours before testing. Cubeb level: 2 %, appropriate for a small-area fragrance product; confirm against IFRA limits for your category.
