Cubeb Pepper Essential Oil for Production
Cubeb, also called tailed pepper, is Piper cubeba, a climbing vine of the pepper family. The essential oil is steam distilled from the dried unripe fruits, which look like black peppercorns with a short stalk attached. The product card lists the INCI name Cubeb Ventós Essential Oil, Germany as the country of production and the synonyms Cubeba officinalis and false pepper. This item comes in a 1 L container.
Composition and scent
Cubeb oil is rich in sesquiterpenes such as the cubebenes, copaene and beta-caryophyllene, with sabinene and alpha-pinene among the monoterpenes. The scent is woody, peppery and spicy with a cool, slightly camphoraceous lift and a dry, warm base. It is softer than black pepper and has none of its bite.
Why developers use it
Cubeb gives a spicy top note that does not overload a composition, and it pairs easily with citrus and woody oils. Thanks to its sesquiterpenes, it also shows reasonable tenacity for a spice oil.
Applications
Perfumery
Masculine, woody and spicy citrus compositions, where it brightens the opening and links it to the base.
Hair care
Shampoos and scalp tonics with a spicy scent.
Men’s grooming
Shower gels, aftershaves and beard balms.
Usage guidance
Leave-on products usually take 0.5 to 1 % of the oil, and rinse-off products can go up to 2 %. Add it once the batch is below 40 °C. Its monoterpenes oxidise, so an antioxidant in the oil phase helps the scent stay fresh.
Compatibility
Bergamot, grapefruit, cedarwood, vetiver, cardamom and ginger. Stable in emulsions; clear gels need a solubiliser.

Example: aftershave balm, 1000 g
The water phase of this 1000 g balm consists of 770 g of distilled water, 30 g of glycerin and 2 g of allantoin, thickened with 3 g of xanthan gum. It is emulsified with 40 g of an olive-derived emulsifier, while 60 g of jojoba oil and 60 g of squalane make up the oil phase. The scent comes from 5 g of cubeb essential oil and 3 g of bergamot FCF essential oil, and the balm is completed with 7 g of preservative and 20 g of ethanol 96 %.
Hydrate the xanthan in glycerin and add it to the water with the allantoin; heat to 75 °C. Melt the emulsifier with jojoba and squalane at 75 °C, combine and homogenise. Below 40 °C add the essential oils premixed in the ethanol, then the preservative. Adjust the pH to about 5.5. Cubeb level: 0.5 %.
Storage and related sizes
