Oakmoss, technically the lichen Evernia prunastri that grows on oak trunks and certain coniferous trees, provides one of the most recognizable ingredients in world perfumery. Its extract carries a dense, earthy, woody, slightly leathery and damp character that has served as the backbone of chypre compositions for generations. In a clean dry container combine the alcohol base with bergamot oil and let it sit for five minutes to allow the top notes to blend. Then add the frankincense resinoid and tonka bean absolute, each pre dissolved in a small amount of alcohol, and mix thoroughly. Finally introduce the oakmoss essential oil and patchouli oil, adding them drop by drop while assessing the developing scent. Pour the finished blend into a dark glass bottle, seal tightly, and let it mature in a cool dark place for at least two weeks, shaking occasionally, after which the fragrance is ready for its intended use.
