In the living parts of the epidermis (basal layer and spinosum layer) contains the same amount of glycoceramides as free sterols or ceramides in combination with phospholipids, forming a polar complex, and vice versa, the stratum corneum is dominated by ceramides and significantly less glycoceramides. There is a predominant amount of free fatty acids, forming the stratum corneum without polarity. Barrier function depends on lamellar lipids, which retain water and prevent excess TEWL. At the hair level, BIO-CERAMIDYL is similar in nature and functionality to the structuring lipids of hair and scalp. Intrinsic lipids form intercellular cement, participating in the adhesion of hair corneocytes. A deficiency of structural lipids makes hair dry, dull and porous.
