Solaveil™ CZ-300: Your Invisible Mineral Shield for Ultimate Sun Protection

Introducing Solaveil™ CZ-300, an advanced, high-performance mineral UV filter proudly made in England. This white to slightly creamy thick paste is a game-changer in sun protection, offering broad-spectrum defense against UVA and UVB rays without the common drawbacks of traditional zinc oxide. As a micronized zinc oxide dispersion, it's expertly crafted to be stable, effective, and most importantly, transparent on the skin. Solaveil™ CZ-300 is the perfect ingredient for creating premium, non-toxic skincare and cosmetics that provide exceptional sun protection for all skin types, including sensitive and children's skin.

Product Description and Key Features

Solaveil™ CZ-300 (also known as Solaveil CZ300, Zinc oxide dispersion, or Solaveil coated ZnO) is a mineral-based sunscreen active that works by reflecting and scattering UV radiation away from the skin. Unlike un-coated zinc oxide powders, this dispersion is specially treated with a silicone coating, which ensures it blends seamlessly into formulations and onto the skin, leaving no visible white cast. This makes it an ideal choice for elegant, everyday products.

Key properties and benefits:

  • Broad-Spectrum UV Filter: Provides robust protection against both UVA and UVB rays, preventing sunburn, premature aging, and long-term sun damage.

  • No White Cast: The finely milled, coated zinc oxide particles in this dispersion ensure a transparent finish, even in high concentrations, making it perfect for daily use and darker skin tones.

  • Photostable and Safe: Solaveil™ CZ-300 remains stable when exposed to sunlight, providing consistent protection. It is non-toxic, safe for use on all skin types, and holds EcoCert approval, highlighting its natural and gentle nature.

  • Reduces Skin Irritation: Its mineral composition makes it less likely to cause skin irritation, phototoxicity, or photoallergies, making it a go-to for sensitive and reactive skin.

  • Easy to Formulate: This thick paste is designed to be easily dispersed in oils and emulsion bases. It is not water-soluble, so it must be added to the oil phase or emulsion base of your recipe.

  • Multiple Functions: In addition to sun protection, it also offers a mattifying effect and can improve the texture and density of cosmetic formulas.

Applications and Usage Areas

Solaveil™ CZ-300 is an incredibly versatile component used across various cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications to provide superior sun protection and skin benefits. Its ease of use and excellent cosmetic feel make it a favorite among formulators.

Cosmetics and Skincare:

  • Sunscreen Creams and Lotions: It's the primary active ingredient for creating high-performance, broad-spectrum sunscreens with an SPF range from 1 to 25%. For higher protection, concentrations of 15-25% are recommended.

  • Daily Moisturizers with SPF: Incorporate it into daily moisturizers and anti-aging creams to provide essential UV protection, reducing photo-damage and keeping skin looking youthful.

  • BB and CC Creams: Solaveil™ CZ-300 is a fantastic choice for BB and CC creams, offering sun protection while also providing a mattifying effect and a smooth, even texture. Use at a concentration of 5-10% for effective protection.

  • Decorative Cosmetics with SPF: Ideal for creating mineral powders, foundations, and makeup bases with built-in SPF. A concentration of 3-6% provides light protection and a mattifying finish.

  • Post-Procedure Creams: Its soothing properties and gentle nature make it perfect for creams used after procedures like lasers, peels, and microdermabrasion, helping to protect and heal vulnerable skin.

  • Children's and Sensitive Skin Products: The non-toxic and hypoallergenic nature of Solaveil™ CZ-300 makes it the safest choice for formulations designed for children and people with very sensitive, allergy-prone skin. A dosage of 10-20% is effective for these products.

Pharmaceutical and Other Uses:

  • Topical Dermatological Products: Used in medical creams and oint for patients with photodermatoses and other light-sensitive skin conditions.

  • Hair and Body Sunscreens: Can be added to lotions, sprays, and conditioners to protect body skin and hair from sun damage.

Recommended Dosing:

  • 1–25% depending on the desired SPF level.

  • 15–25% for high-SPF sunscreens.

  • 5–10% for BB/CC creams.

  • 3–6% for foundations and tinted products.

  • 10–20% for children's cosmetic products.

Recipe: Lightweight, Tinted SPF 15 Daily Moisturizer

Create a light and protective tinted moisturizer that provides sun protection without feeling heavy or leaving a white cast. This recipe is perfect for everyday wear.

Phase A (Oil Phase):

  • 12 g Jojoba Oil

  • 3 g Olivem 1000 (Emulsifier)

Phase B (Water Phase):

  • 69 g Distilled Water

  • 3 g Glycerin

  • 1 g Allantoin

  • 0.5 g Xantham Gum

Phase C (Cool Down Phase):

  • 10 g Solaveil™ CZ-300 (equivalent to 10% for SPF ~15)

  • 1 g Preservative (e.g., Optiphen Plus)

  • 0.5 g Vitamin E

  • 0.5 g Liquid Foundation Pigment (or to desired shade)

Instructions for Preparation:

Prepare the water phase: In a heat-resistant beaker, combine distilled water, glycerin, and allantoin. Sprinkle the xantham gum over the top and whisk until a gel forms, then set aside.

Prepare the oil phase: In a separate heat-resistant beaker, combine jojoba oil and Olivem 1000. Heat both the oil and water phases in a water bath to 70°C, ensuring the Olivem 1000 is fully melted.

Emulsify: Slowly pour the heated water phase into the heated oil phase while continuously mixing with a stick blender. Continue blending for a few minutes until a smooth, thick emulsion forms.

Cool down and add actives: Remove the beaker from the water bath and place it in a cool bath of ice water. Continue to mix the emulsion as it cools. When the temperature drops below 40°C, add the Solaveil™ CZ-300, preservative, vitamin E, and liquid foundation pigment. Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are well-combined and the color is uniform.

Final check and packaging: Check the pH of the cream (it should be around 5.5-6.5). Pour the finished tinted moisturizer into a clean, sanitized airless pump bottle or jar.

Recommendations for Use:

  • Dosing: This recipe uses a 10% concentration of Solaveil™ CZ-300, which should provide a broad-spectrum SPF of approximately 15. For higher SPF, you can increase the concentration up to 25%, while for light protection, you can use less.

  • Blending: The key to an invisible finish is thorough mixing. Ensure the Solaveil™ CZ-300 is fully dispersed in the cooled emulsion to prevent clumping and a streaky appearance.

  • Storage: Store the finished moisturizer in an opaque container to protect it from light. It's crucial to use an effective preservative to ensure a long shelf life, typically up to 6 months.

  • Application: Apply a generous amount to your face and neck as the last step of your morning skincare routine. Reapply every two hours when exposed to direct sunlight.

  • Patch Test: Always perform a patch test before using any new product, especially if you have sensitive skin.
