Why a 2 ml sample of Si-Matrix matters when building a hair care formula
A 2 ml sample of Si-Matrix is meant for early lab trials, letting a formulator check how the silicone component behaves in a blend before committing to a larger batch of raw material. This ingredient belongs to the category of Silicones and Conditioning Surfactants for Hair, and its main use lies in hair care formulations: conditioners, leave-in serums, detangling sprays and masks. Even a small share of this silicone in a formula noticeably reduces static on the hair, gives it a smooth slip during combing, and leaves a thin film on the strand that helps protect against mechanical damage and partly against heat styling with flat irons or blow dryers.
Around the world, silicone components of this kind are used not only in daily hair conditioners but also in products for colored or chemically treated hair, where restoring cuticle smoothness after harsh processing is the priority. Some formulators also use similar silicones in decorative cosmetics to add a silky slip to certain cream products, and in household chemical products where surface hydrophobization is needed. Still, the largest demand for this type of silicone remains in professional hair care, where the finished product must keep its conditioning effect through repeated washing.
When building a formula, the silicone component is usually added at the final stage, once the main batch has cooled to no more than 40 degrees, to avoid destabilizing the emulsion. A typical dosage ranges from 1 to 5 percent of the total formula weight, depending on the desired level of conditioning and the type of base used. The ingredient pairs well with cationic conditioning agents that reinforce the smoothing effect on hair cuticles: combining it with Polyquaternium-11 gives a stronger moisture-retention and volumizing result, while adding Polyquaternium-6 helps reduce tangling in longer hair. For formulas focused on protecting color-treated hair, pairing it with Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride improves how evenly the product spreads along the hair length.
Store the component in a tightly sealed container, in a dry place at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. The 2 ml size is ideal for checking concentration levels and compatibility with the surfactants and thickeners already chosen for a formula, before scaling up to full production batches.
Trial leave-in smoothing spray
Distilled water 40 ml
Si-Matrix 1 ml
Polyquaternium-11 2 ml
Glycerin 1 ml
Preservative 0.4 ml
Measure
the water into a container, add glycerin and preservative, and stir until fully
blended. In a separate small container, mix Si-Matrix with Polyquaternium-11
until smooth and lump-free, then slowly pour this mixture into the water phase
while stirring continuously for two to three minutes. Transfer the finished
blend into a spray bottle and let it rest for a day to stabilize before testing
on hair strands.
