Recipe: Luxurious Grape-Scented Cold Process Soap
Create a beautiful and aromatic cold process soap bar with our Fragrance Oil Dolce. This recipe is for a beginner to intermediate soap maker.
Recipe Ingredients:
-
Olive Oil: 40% (for a gentle and moisturizing bar)
-
Coconut Oil: 30% (for great lather and hardness)
-
Palm Oil: 30% (for hardness and a stable lather)
-
Sodium Hydroxide (Lye): Sufficient amount to saponify the oils (use a lye calculator)
-
Distilled Water: Sufficient amount for the lye solution (use a lye calculator)
-
Fragrance Oil Dolce: 2% of total oil weight
Directions: Preparation
Always wear safety goggles and gloves. Measure all ingredients precisely. Use a lye calculator to determine the exact amounts of lye and water for your specific oils.
Lye Solution
Slowly and carefully add the lye to the distilled water in a well-ventilated area, stirring until it's fully dissolved. Be mindful of the heat. Let the solution cool to about 45-50°C.
Mixing Oils
In a separate heat-safe container, melt the solid oils (coconut and palm). Add the liquid olive oil. Ensure the oils are fully mixed and at a temperature between 40-50°C.
Emulsification (Trace)
When both the lye solution and the oils are in the correct temperature range, slowly pour the lye solution into the oils. Use a stick blender to mix until you reach a light trace, where the mixture resembles a thin pudding.
Adding Fragrance
At the trace stage, add the Fragrance Oil Dolce and stir it in quickly and thoroughly, either by hand or with short bursts of the stick blender.
Pour and Insulate
Pour the soap mixture into your prepared mold. Cover the mold with a towel to insulate and allow it to go through the gel phase for a stronger, longer-lasting bar.
Curing
After 24-48 hours, carefully unmold the soap. Cut it into bars and place them in a well-ventilated area to cure for 4-6 weeks. This process allows the soap to harden and become milder.
Recommendations:
-
Usage Rate: For a noticeable and long-lasting scent, a 2% usage rate is recommended for this fragrance in cold process soap. You can adjust this based on your personal preference.
-
Safety: Always follow proper safety precautions when working with lye. Wear protective gear, work in a well-ventilated space, and keep children and pets away from the work area.
-
Testing: Always perform a small test batch to ensure the fragrance behaves as expected in your specific formulation.
-
Storage: Store the finished soap bars in a cool, dry place.
