A ready-made base that turns lip balm formulation into a simple process

Lip balm base is a pre-balanced fatty composition with controlled melt behavior and texture, which removes the need to calculate wax-to-oil ratios from scratch. A crafter simply melts the base, blends in active ingredients, and pours the mixture into molds or tubes. This product belongs to the section components for lipstick, balm, lip gloss, which gathers materials for making both care and decorative lip products. The 10 g pack size suits home crafting and small trial batches, letting you test the base before ordering larger volumes for a full product line.

The main use of this base is producing hydrating and protective lip balms, as well as tinted versions with pigments or mica. Cosmetics remain the leading consumer industry for such bases, though similar compositions also appear in solid hand cream bars, cuticle sticks and spot moisturizing pencils, wherever a firm texture that melts on skin contact is required. Active ingredients are usually blended in at 45-60 degrees Celsius, while essential oils and volatile flavor additives should be added later, around 40 degrees, to preserve their aroma.

The base pairs well with plant oils, shea butter, vitamin E as an antioxidant, and various flavoring components. For a subtle sweet taste in the finished balm, many formulators use natural sweetener, added in a small amount during the cooling stage to retain its flavor. An alternative option is stevia extract in coconut oil, which brings sweetness while also contributing nourishing lipids to the formula. For a more delicate taste without a lingering aftertaste, erythritol works well, dissolving into the fat phase under moderate heating.

The recommended share of the base within a balm formula ranges from 60 to 90 percent of total mass, with the remainder allocated to oils, texture-adjusting waxes, and flavoring or coloring additives. Store the base in a dry place at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat sources, in a tightly closed container to prevent oxidation of the fatty components and texture changes upon reheating.

Sweet trial-batch lip balm

Lip balm base - 10 g

Shea butter - 3 g

Natural sweetener - 1 g

Vitamin E - 2 drops

Flavor oil - 3 drops

Melt the base together with shea butter over a water bath at around 55 degrees until smooth. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool to 40 degrees, then stir in the sweetener, vitamin E and flavor oil. Pour into small molds or tubes and allow to set at room temperature for at least two hours before use.
