Product Description
Caustic Soda: A Versatile Substance for Experienced Soap Makers
Caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), is a key ingredient in soap making. It is a white crystalline substance that dissolves in water with the release of heat.
Properties:
- Strong alkali: NaOH has a high pH (13-14), making it caustic and capable of causing burns.
- Hygroscopic: It readily absorbs moisture from the air, so caustic soda must be stored in an airtight container.
- Solubility: It dissolves well in water, forming a solution with a strong alkaline odor.
- Heat evolution: When NaOH dissolves, it releases a significant amount of heat, which must be considered when working with it.
Application in soap making:
- Saponification of fats: NaOH is used to saponify fats and oils, which results in the formation of soap and glycerin.
- Thickening: Adding NaOH to the soap solution allows you to adjust its thickness.
- Increased foaming: NaOH increases the foaming of the soap and makes it more lush.
Important:
- When working with caustic soda, it is necessary to use protective gloves, goggles, and a respirator.
- NaOH should be stored out of the reach of children.
- Do not allow NaOH to come into contact with skin or mucous membranes.
In addition to soap making, caustic soda is used in:
- Chemical industry: for the production of paper, textiles, detergents, and cellulose.
- Wastewater treatment: NaOH is used to neutralize acids and oxidize organic matter.
- Petroleum refining: NaOH is used to refine oil and petroleum products.
