Why Ratania Root CO2 Extract Matters for Oral Care, Scalp and Skin Formulas
Ratania is a low-growing shrub native to the arid regions of Peru and Bolivia, valued for its root rich in tannins and phenolic compounds with strong astringent properties. The CO2 extraction method uses pressurized carbon dioxide instead of chemical solvents, capturing a concentrated profile of the root's active constituents without heat damage. This extract belongs to the CO2 Extracts category, which brings together potent natural concentrates favored by formulators across skincare, haircare and pharmaceutical production.
One of the most globally recognized uses of ratania root is in oral care formulations. Its astringent tannins have long been used in toothpastes, mouth rinses, gum gels and balms, where the extract helps support gum tissue tone and a sensation of freshness. This makes ratania a staple ingredient in dental and pharmaceutical manufacturing far beyond niche cosmetic applications, reflecting its steady industrial demand worldwide.
In skincare, ratania CO2 extract is popular in formulas targeting oily and blemish-prone skin with enlarged pores, contributing to a more toned and refined skin appearance in toners, creams and serums. In haircare, it is added to shampoos, conditioners and scalp lotions to support scalp balance and strengthen hair roots. It pairs well with other astringent and toning CO2 extracts, such as Oak CO2 Extract (bark), which reinforces the astringent profile in scalp and oral care blends, and Rosemary CO2 Extract, which adds a fresh, energizing note to haircare and oily skin formulas. For antioxidant-rich blends, it is often combined with Pomegranate CO2 Extract, which adds extra protective character to the recipe.
The extract should be introduced during the cool phase of a formulation, at temperatures not exceeding 40-45 degrees, to preserve heat-sensitive compounds. A typical usage rate ranges from 0.2 to 1 percent of the total formula weight, depending on the product type and desired intensity. The 5 g package size is well suited for home formulation and small trial batches, allowing formulators to test a recipe before scaling up to studio or industrial production. Store the extract in a tightly closed container, in a cool place away from direct light and high temperatures, to maintain the stability of active compounds throughout its shelf life.
