Juniper Essential Oil — aromatic plant raw material for cosmetic and industrial applications
Juniper essential oil is a volatile plant derived raw material obtained by steam distillation of Juniperus communis berries. This cosmetic ingredient is widely used in cosmetic manufacturing, fragrance systems and household products due to its stable woody coniferous profile and formulation compatibility. In B2B manufacturing it is used as a functional aromatic raw material for cleansing systems and fragrance development.
In formulation the oil shows stability in oil phases and alcohol systems. In water based products it requires solubilization to achieve uniform dispersion. Due to its volatile nature it strongly influences sensory perception and freshness profile of the final product.
Properties and functional role
The oil contains monoterpenes such as alpha pinene, beta pinene and limonene which define its behavior in formulations. It acts as an aromatic and functional ingredient affecting product perception and distribution.
It is compatible with emollients, oils, surfactants and alcohol systems. In aqueous systems solubilizers are required for stability.
Properties and result
Provides a clean coniferous aroma and enhances freshness perception. Improves sensory feel and reduces heaviness of formulations.
Used in cleansing products, shampoos, fragrance systems and SPA applications. Typical dosage is 0.05–1%.
Purpose
Applied in skin care, hair care, SPA and fragrance products. Used in household cleaning and deodorizing systems.
Can be used in flavor systems under controlled conditions.
Application
Integrated into creams, gels, shampoos, cleansers, candles and diffusers. Requires solubilization in water based systems.
Recipe
Refreshing cleansing gel with coniferous aromatic profile
Ingredients:
Purified water — 72 ml
Cocamidopropyl Betaine — 10 g
Decyl Glucoside — 8 g
Glycerin — 4 g
Polysorbate 20 — 3 g
Juniper essential oil — 0.4 g
Panthenol — 1 g
Preservative Euxyl PE 9010 — 0.8 g
Xanthan gum — 0.8 g
The water phase is combined with glycerin and xanthan gum to form a uniform base, followed by gentle incorporation of surfactants. The essential oil is pre-mixed with Polysorbate 20 and added below 40°C. Remaining components are introduced and the system is homogenized and stabilized before filling.
Manufacturing stability
Due to volatility the oil is added at the cooling stage. Protection from air and light is required.
Batch consistency depends on raw material source, therefore quality control is essential.
