Film-forming humectant designed for bulk hair and skin care manufacturing
Chitosan PCA is a water-soluble cationic form of chitosan combined with pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, a natural component of the skin's own moisturizing factor. This combination of chitosan's positive charge and the hygroscopic nature of PCA makes the ingredient especially valuable in hair care manufacturing, where it appears in conditioners, leave-in sprays, restorative masks and styling formulas. The 1 kg package is intended for formulators and production facilities that need a dependable raw material supply for continuous, large-scale batch manufacturing. The product belongs to the moisturizing actives category, since its molecules bind water at the surface of hair and skin and form a thin protective film.
Because of its positive charge, chitosan PCA attaches readily to the negatively charged surface of damaged hair, reducing static, easing detangling and improving overall smoothness. In skin formulations it functions as a humectant and light film former that lowers transepidermal water loss, making it suitable for creams, lotions, serums and after-shave products. In broader industrial chemistry the ingredient occasionally appears in household formulas requiring moisture retention and texture, while pharmaceutical research explores its potential to support the healing of minor skin surface damage.
Chitosan PCA is typically added to the water phase using a cold process or at a temperature not exceeding 40-45 degrees Celsius, since higher heat may reduce some of its functional properties. Recommended usage levels range from 0.5 to 3 percent depending on the product type: lighter emulsions and sprays require the lower end, while intensive restorative masks can use the higher end of the range. It pairs well with other humectants in the lineup, such as urea, which reinforces the moisture-binding effect, Jerusalem artichoke inulin liquid, which adds softness and nourishment, and sea kelp bioferment, which contributes minerals and antioxidant support.
When working with large batches it is important to ensure thorough and even mixing to prevent localized thickening, and to monitor the final pH of the formula, since chitosan PCA is sensitive to strongly alkaline conditions. The raw material should be stored in a tightly sealed container, in a dry area at room temperature, away from moisture and direct sunlight, which helps preserve its stability throughout the stated shelf life.
Lightweight leave-in detangling spray for salon-scale production
Distilled water 900 ml
Chitosan PCA 18 g
Panthenol 15 g
Glycerin 12 g
Spray emulsifier 4 g
Preservative 5 g
Fragrance oil 4 ml
Dissolve chitosan PCA in warm distilled water while stirring slowly until fully clear and free of clumps. Add glycerin and panthenol, continuing to mix on low speed for several minutes, then incorporate the spray emulsifier and blend until the texture becomes uniform. Finally add the preservative and fragrance oil, mix thoroughly and pour the finished formula into spray bottles, allowing it to rest for a day before use.
