Instructions:
- Combine the ingredients of Phase A in a heat-resistant beaker and heat to 70-75°C (158-167°F) while stirring until the xanthan gum is fully hydrated.
- In a separate heat-resistant beaker, combine the ingredients of Phase B and heat to 70-75°C (158-167°F) while stirring until the UV filter is completely dissolved and the mixture is clear.
- In a third heat-resistant beaker, combine the ingredients of Phase C and heat to 70-75°C (158-167°F) until the waxes are completely melted.
- Slowly pour Phase B into Phase C while stirring with a homogenizer or high-shear mixer until a uniform mixture is achieved.
- Slowly pour the combined Phase B/C into Phase A while continuously mixing with the homogenizer or high-shear mixer until a smooth emulsion forms.
- Continue mixing while allowing the emulsion to cool down to approximately 40°C (104°F).
- Once cooled, add the ingredients of Phase D (preservative, vitamin E, and fragrance, if used) and mix well.
- Adjust the pH of the lotion to 6.0-7.0 using a 10% sodium hydroxide solution (Phase E), if necessary, checking with a pH meter.
- Transfer the finished sunscreen lotion into a clean, opaque container.
Application Recommendations:
