How a Cationic Silicone Dispersion Improves Hair Manageability and Fabric Feel
Dow Corning 949 Cationic Emulsion is a ready-to-use dispersion of high molecular weight dimethicone stabilized with cationic emulsifiers. Because the particles carry a positive charge, the emulsion shows strong affinity to the negatively charged surface of hair and textile fibers, ensuring even distribution and durable film retention even after rinsing with water. This is why the product belongs to the Silicones and Conditioning Surfactants for Hair
category, which brings together ingredients for smoothness, shine and easy detangling.
The main application of this raw material is professional and home hair care formulation: conditioners, balms, masks, leave-in sprays and serums. The emulsion reduces static electricity, eases combing of both wet and dry hair, adds a silky feel and offers protection against heat styling tools such as blow dryers and flat irons. Beyond cosmetics, cationic silicone emulsions of this type are widely used in the textile industry as fabric softeners and laundry conditioners, as well as in household chemical production for rinse aids and antistatic formulas. This versatility makes the ingredient valuable not only for cosmetic labs but also for small manufacturers of household products.
The emulsion should be added at the final formulation stage, into a cool phase or one gently warmed to 35-40 degrees Celsius, after the base emulsion has cooled and thickened. Excessive heat can disrupt the stability of the cationic particles, so temperatures above 45 degrees should be avoided. Typical dosage in conditioners and masks ranges from 1 to 5 percent of the finished product weight, while leave-in hair products usually require 0.5 to 2 percent. The ingredient pairs well with other conditioning agents, such as B-lamine, which enhances moisturizing and softening, and with lightweight volatile silicones like Hairless silicone fluid, which give the finished texture a lighter feel without weighing hair down.
When formulating for fine or color-treated hair, the emulsion is often combined with cationic gelling agents such as Cation Gel, allowing for a more stable texture and improved application. The 50 ml packaging is convenient for home cosmetic formulation and small trial batches, giving enough material for several experimental conditioner or mask series before scaling up to larger production runs.
Store the emulsion in a tightly closed container at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and freezing conditions, since low temperatures can cause the emulsion to separate. Before use, gently shake the bottle to redistribute the phase evenly.
