Purpose	Panthenol (pantothenic acid or vitamin B-5) is present in all living cells. It acts as an important dietary component due to its role in the formation of coenzyme A. Acetyl coenzyme A is formed from the breakdown of carbohydrates, fatty acids and certain amino acids in the early stages of metabolism. Because of this, it plays a vital role in hydrocarbon metabolism. The main function of acetyl coenzyme A is to supply activated acetic acid to the citric acid cycle (Krebs cycle). This in turn produces carbon dioxide, water and energy. Coenzyme A also transfers other groups such as N-acetylglucosamine and acetylcholine to aid steroid production and fatty acid resynthesis. Another important physiological role of coenzyme A is to help the body detoxify foreign substances. P-anthenol is an alcohol analogue of the vitamin pantothenic acid. In a living cell, P-anthenol is converted to the effective form of vitamin d-pantothenic acid by several enzymes, including alcohol dehydrogenase.
