Bronopol for controlled preservation in compatible cosmetic formulas
Bronopol, INCI 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1,3-Diol, is a preservative ingredient for compatible water-containing cosmetic systems. It is used in formulas such as shampoos, body washes, liquid hand cleansers, lotions, creams and aqueous cosmetic bases. Its role is technical preservation support, not cleansing, conditioning or skin care performance.
Formulation use
Bronopol should be selected only after reviewing the complete formula. Water quality, raw material purity, pH, packaging, manufacturing hygiene and compatibility all matter. A preservative cannot correct poor production conditions or an unstable base.
The formulator should carefully review surfactants, protein hydrolysates, amino acid blends, botanical complexes and neutralizing agents. Compatibility assessment must be based on full ingredient documentation, not only on trade names.
Suitable applications
Bronopol is relevant to water based and emulsion products when the formula is compatible. It is not intended for candles, dry fragrance blends, anhydrous oils or confectionery systems because those categories do not require the same water phase preservation approach.

Emulsifying wax 55 g
Cetearyl alcohol 25 g
Caprylic capric triglycerides 50 g

Total batch weight: 1000 g
Prepare the water phase with purified water, aloe hydrosol, glycerin and betaine. In a separate vessel, combine emulsifying wax, cetearyl alcohol, caprylic capric triglycerides and sunflower oil. Heat both phases as required for the selected emulsifier.
Combine the phases with steady mixing until a uniform emulsion forms. Begin cooling. Add sodium phytate and introduce Bronopol according to the supplier instructions for the actual raw material grade.
Add the compatible preservation co-component, vitamin e and fragrance during the appropriate cool-down stage. Measure final pH after the batch is complete and adjust only if required by the product specification.
Allow the lotion to rest before filling. Check viscosity, appearance, odor, homogeneity and pump performance.
Quality control
Finished products containing Bronopol should be evaluated for pH, appearance, viscosity, odor stability, physical stability and packaging compatibility. Preservation must be assessed for the complete finished formula, especially when hydrosols, botanical extracts or protein materials are included.
Bronopol is a specialized preservative for compatible aqueous cosmetic products. Reliable use depends on accurate dosing, compatibility review, controlled processing and finished product testing.
