Tretinoin 50 g for production batches
Tretinoin, listed on the card with the INCI Tretinoin, Retinoic acid, is all-trans retinoic acid, a retinoid and the acid form of vitamin A, formula C20H28O2. According to the card it is a yellow powder made in China, packed in 50 grams, with a best-before date of 11.2028.
A 50 g pack is for when the process is settled and you need material for batches. At 0.05% it covers about 100 kg of finished mass. For first trials there is tretinoin 2 g, and other production raw materials are in cosmetic actives wholesale.
Key properties
Easily soluble in oil according to the card, and practically insoluble in water. The conjugated double bonds that give the powder its yellow colour also make it prone to isomerisation and oxidation under light, air and heat. Results therefore depend heavily on how the material is stored, weighed and added.
Applications
Tretinoin is supplied as a raw material for professional manufacturers and laboratories working with retinoids. Choosing the product type and concentration, and making sure each target market's rules are met, remains the developer's responsibility. The 50 g pack also suits laboratories that want one consistent lot for a full series of tests.
How to use in production
The card gives an overall range of 0.01 to 0.1%, not to be exceeded. Add it in the cool-down phase at 40 °C or below, gradually and away from direct light. Predissolving the powder in part of the oil phase gives the most even distribution. Keep a retained sample of the base without the active as a control, because comparing colour and odour during stability testing quickly shows any change.
Compatibility and processing notes
Use stable liquid oils or triglycerides as the carrier and a reliable system from emulsifiers for the base. Tocopherol in the oil phase slows down oxidation. According to the card, it should not be combined with alcohol-based solutions or used on the same day as an AHA peel. Fill finished mass into opaque, preferably airless, packaging. Before a batch, check the raw material against the card: the powder should be yellow and uniform, with no lumps or foreign particles. Record the lot number and the opening date in the batch record.
Appearance and specifications
Yellow powder. INCI Tretinoin, Retinoic acid. Easily soluble in oil. Pack size 50 grams, packed in a shipping container. Country of production China.
Lab note: portioning and stock solution
To avoid opening the whole pack at every weighing, split it into portions after first opening. Under subdued light, weigh five 10.00 g portions into amber glass vials with tight caps. Flush the headspace with inert gas if the lab has it, then label each vial.
For incoming lot checks, prepare 100 g of 0.1% stock solution from 0.100 g tretinoin, 99.40 g caprylic/capric triglyceride and 0.50 g tocopherol. Stir at no more than 40 °C until dissolved and keep it in amber glass labelled with concentration, date and lot number. Wear gloves, safety glasses and a mask.
Storage
The card says to keep it in a cool, dark place in a tightly closed container. Bring portions from cold storage to room temperature before opening them to avoid condensation.
FAQ
How much finished mass does 50 g cover?
About 100 kg at 0.05% or 200 kg at 0.025%.
Where is it produced?
China, according to the card.
How is it added to an emulsion?
Dissolve it in part of the oil phase and add it to the base once it has cooled to 40 °C or below.
How does it differ from the 2 g pack?
It is the same material. Only the pack size is different.
