Instructions for Preparation:
- Sanitization: Thoroughly sanitize all your equipment, including beakers, stirrers, and lotion bottles, using isopropyl alcohol. Allow everything to air dry completely.
- Phase A (Water Phase): In a heat-resistant beaker, combine the distilled water and vegetable glycerin. Heat gently on a double boiler to 70-75°C (158-167°F).
- Phase B (Oil Phase): In a separate heat-resistant beaker, combine the emulsifying wax, shea butter, and jojoba oil. Heat gently on the same double boiler to 70-75°C (158-167°F) until all solid ingredients are completely melted and clear.
- Emulsification: Slowly pour the heated water phase (Phase A) into the heated oil phase (Phase B) while continuously stirring with a stick blender or whisk on low speed. Continue blending/whisking until the emulsion forms and appears uniform and creamy. As the lotion cools, it will thicken.
- Cooling: Allow the lotion to cool to below 40°C (104°F), stirring occasionally to prevent a "skin" from forming on top.
- Phase C (Cool Down Phase): Once the lotion has cooled sufficiently, add the Tomato Leaf Essential Oil, Vitamin E Oil, and your chosen preservative. Stir thoroughly to ensure all ingredients are fully incorporated.
- pH Adjustment (Optional but Recommended): Test the pH of your finished lotion. For body lotions, an ideal pH is typically between 5.0 and 6.0. Adjust if necessary using a diluted solution of lactic acid (to lower pH) or baking soda solution (to raise pH), adding drop by drop.
- Packaging: Transfer the finished lotion into clean, sanitized lotion bottles or jars.
Recommendations for Application and Use:
- Dosage: The recommended dosage for Tomato Leaf Essential Oil in lotions and creams is 0.1-0.5%. We used 0.5% for a noticeable yet balanced aroma. Adjust based on your preference and the desired intensity of the "green" note.
- Incorporation: Always add essential oils and preservatives during the cool-down phase (below 40°C/104°F) to protect their integrity and ensure effectiveness.
- Consistency: The consistency of your lotion can be adjusted by varying the amount of emulsifying wax and butters/oils. More wax will create a thicker lotion, while less will result in a lighter fluid.
- Storage: Store your finished body lotion in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, to maximize its shelf life and maintain ingredient efficacy.
- Patch Test: Before widespread use, always perform a patch test on a small, inconspicuous area of skin (e.g., inner elbow) to check for any sensitivities or allergic reactions to the new product.
- Not for Candles: As indicated, this essential oil is not typically used in candles due to its primary application in water- or oil-soluble cosmetic and fragrance formulations. However, it can be excellent for aromatizing finished candles via surface application or in diffuser blends.
