Why Industrial Chemists Keep Coming Back to This Reagent
Thiourea supplied in 25 kg packaging belongs to the Chemical Raw Materials category and remains one of the most consistently demanded reagents across heavy and light industry worldwide. Global demand is driven primarily by metal finishing, textile processing, photochemistry and agricultural technologies, while cosmetic use remains a minor, highly specialized niche rather than the main market driver.
The largest application area is electroplating and metal finishing. The reagent is included in chemical and electrochemical silvering baths, brightening and polishing solutions for copper and brass items, and functions as a corrosion inhibitor in acidic pickling baths. Working concentrations typically range from 10 to 30 grams per liter of solution, and the reagent is dissolved in water at 30-40 degrees Celsius before other components are introduced into the bath.
The second major field of use is textile manufacturing. Thiourea is applied as an antichlor after fabric bleaching and included in mordant dyeing formulations, where it stabilizes the dye and improves color uniformity across the fiber. For related fiber and hide treatment tasks, the assortment also includes Lanolin Flakes, traditionally used for greasing yarn and leather, giving fibers elasticity and protecting them from drying out during subsequent processing steps.
In photochemistry, the reagent is a component of fixing and toning solutions, while in agriculture it serves as a growth regulator and defoliant that speeds up plant preparation before mechanized harvesting. Another notable use is in the production of urea- and thiourea-formaldehyde resins, as well as a component of drilling fluids in the oil and gas sector, where it reduces the corrosive activity of the working medium.
In redox and analytical processes, thiourea is frequently paired with oxidizing reagents, among which Manganese oxide (tatraoxide) holds a notable place, used in analytical chemistry and as a component of oxidative systems. In alkaline process solutions, such as textile treatment baths or electroplating tanks, a useful partner is Potassium carbonate (potash), which regulates the alkalinity of the medium and stabilizes solution parameters.
The 25 kg packaging is suited to the needs of small and mid-sized operations: electroplating workshops, textile laboratories, and material treatment units that require a regular but not conveyor-scale volume of reagent. This format allows for planned procurement without excessive warehouse stock while keeping the process stable and predictable.
The reagent should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated area, in tightly closed original packaging, away from direct sunlight, moisture and strong oxidizing agents. When storage conditions are respected, the product retains its declared properties throughout the entire shelf life.
Copper brightening bath for small-scale metal finishing
Water 1000 ml
Thiourea 25 g
Citric acid 10 g
Heat
the water to 35-40 degrees Celsius and dissolve the thiourea completely, then
add the citric acid while stirring gently until the solution becomes uniform.
Immerse the cleaned copper items into the bath for 5-10 minutes with light
agitation, then rinse the pieces thoroughly under running water and dry them at
room temperature away from direct heat sources.
