Sophora Japonica Oil Extract as a functional antioxidant and lipid-phase stabilizer for advanced formulation systems
Sophora japonica oil extract is a plant-derived raw material obtained by transferring active compounds from the botanical source into an oil medium. In international formulation practice it is also referred to as oil soluble sophora extract, flavonoid rich botanical extract and Japanese pagoda tree oil extract. The primary value of this ingredient comes from its flavonoid content, including rutin and related compounds, which are widely used in formulation systems as antioxidant and stabilizing components.
For global B2B applications, this ingredient is valued because it provides a balance between natural origin and technological functionality. It integrates easily into oil and emulsion systems without requiring complex processing steps. This makes it suitable for both development formulations and industrial production, where consistency and stability are critical factors.
Properties and functional role
Sophora japonica oil extract functions as an antioxidant within the lipid phase of a formulation. It helps reduce oxidative degradation of oils and emollients, which is particularly important in formulations containing unsaturated lipids. Within formulation systems it does not act as a structuring agent but contributes to maintaining the integrity of the oil phase.
From a technological perspective it shows good compatibility with vegetable oils, waxes, emulsifiers and other lipophilic ingredients. It does not require dissolution in water and can be incorporated directly into the oil phase. This simplifies the production process and reduces the risk of formulation instability caused by improper incorporation.
Properties and result
In finished products, the extract supports the stability of the lipid phase and helps prevent undesirable changes such as rancidity or odor shifts during storage. In emulsion systems it contributes to maintaining a uniform structure when combined with a properly balanced formulation.
From a sensory perspective, it has minimal impact on texture when used within recommended ranges. The product remains smooth and easy to apply without becoming heavy. It may introduce a slight natural tint depending on concentration, but does not significantly alter the visual clarity of the formulation.
Purpose
This ingredient is used in creams, balms, oil blends, emulsions and SPA-oriented products. It is particularly relevant in formulations where lipid stability and oxidation resistance are important.
In contract manufacturing it is used as part of a stability support system, helping to maintain consistent product performance across batches. It is also well suited for natural and plant-based product lines.
Application
Sophora japonica oil extract is incorporated into the oil phase or added during the cooling stage of emulsions. It is compatible with a wide range of oils, emollients, waxes and lipophilic actives. Proper mixing is essential to ensure uniform distribution within the system.
Temperature control is important during processing. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can reduce the activity of its functional compounds. For optimal performance, it should be added with controlled heat exposure or during the cooling phase.
Recipe
Nourishing antioxidant cream
Ingredients:
Purified water — 65 g
Glycerin — 4 g
ERCAWAX CE V — 3.8 g
Cetearyl alcohol — 1.7 g
Shea butter — 5 g
Jojoba oil — 5 g
Sophora japonica oil extract — 2 g
Phenoxyethanol — 0.8 g
Panthenol — 1 g
Calendula extract — 3 g
Xanthan gum — 0.3 g
Lactic acid — 0.2 g
Technology: xanthan gum is first hydrated in the water phase until a uniform structure is achieved. The oil phase containing oils, emulsifier and cetearyl alcohol is heated to 70–75°C. The phases are then combined with homogenization to form a stable emulsion. The sophora extract can be added either in the oil phase or during cooling at around 40°C. Active ingredients and preservative are then incorporated, followed by pH adjustment.
Instruction: avoid prolonged heating of the extract, as it may reduce its functional effectiveness. Ensure proper mixing to achieve uniform distribution. Do not add without agitation. Final pH should always be checked after full formulation completion to ensure stability.
Manufacturing stability
Sophora japonica oil extract demonstrates stable performance in both development and industrial production. It scales effectively without requiring changes in processing equipment. When proper temperature control and incorporation methods are followed, the formulation maintains consistency and stability across batches.
