Palmarosa Essential Oil, 1 L
Palmarosa, Cymbopogon martinii, is a perennial grass related to lemongrass and citronella, native to India, where it has long been cultivated for its oil. The oil is steam distilled from the dried grass, usually harvested at flowering. The product card lists the INCI name Palmarosa essentia Oil, India as the country of production and a 1 L container.
Composition
Palmarosa is known for a very high geraniol content, typically 70 to 85 %, alongside geranyl acetate, linalool and small amounts of farnesol. Geraniol is what gives the oil its rose-like character.
Odour
Floral and rosy, fresh, with light herbaceous and citrus touches. Perfumers often use it as an economical building block in rose accords.
Applications
Skin care
Creams, toners and fluids that need a floral scent of natural origin.
Deodorants and body care
Deodorant creams, lotions and shower gels.
Perfumery
Rose and floral accords, especially combined with geranium.
Usage guidance
Palmarosa is used at 0.5 to 1 % in leave-on products and at up to 2 % in rinse-off ones. Add it during cool-down below 40 °C, and use a solubiliser in water-based products.
Labelling and safety
Geraniol, linalool and farnesol are EU fragrance allergens that must be declared above set thresholds. In leave-on products, calculate the oil level with the geraniol content in mind.
Compatibility
Geranium, rose, lavender, bergamot, sandalwood, cedarwood and ylang ylang.
Product data
The oil is distilled from Cymbopogon martinii grass and carries the INCI name Palmarosa essentia Oil. It is produced in India and packed in a 1 L container.
Example: rose-scented facial toner, 500 g
To make 500 g of toner, combine 300 g of rose hydrosol with 180 g of distilled water and 10 g of glycerin. Dissolve 1 g of palmarosa essential oil in 4.5 g of polysorbate 20 before adding it, and finish with 4.5 g of preservative for aqueous systems.
Stir the palmarosa oil into the polysorbate until clear. Combine the hydrosol, water and glycerin, then add the oil premix slowly while stirring. Add the preservative and adjust the pH to about 5. Palmarosa level: 0.2 %, a deliberately low figure for a facial product.
